Wikipedia: A phobia (from the Greek: φόβος,phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear") is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people.

Being "irrational", it is expected that relatively few people suffer from the affliction, however, fear of spiders is very common.

This technically means its the "Norm", and not so irrational.

If this is the case, Arachnophobia itself is an oxymoron, and Arachnophillia is the obviously irrational form.

To test this theory, I ask you, Are you Arachnophobic?

Speaking of failed phobia labels, "Homophobia" technically means "Irrational fear of things remaining the same".

No, I am not. But a phobia and fear are different. Many people avoid spiders but doesn't mean they have a phobia.

They may go oshitaspider but they don't break down and cry when they see one.

Yes, I am and I can tell you that it's a common fear because it usually comes from a parent displaying it when you're in your developing stages.

And it will remain seem as irrational aslong as your country isn't populated by very common amounts of poisonous ones.

First of: HA, that is just awesome.
Second: That is the way I react :)
Third:
yes... I really don't like big spiders... the creep me the hell out. And I don't know why. I know that they are no poisonous and can't hurt me.. but still the creep the hell out of me.
But only the big once. I don't care for the small once or.. what are the called.. The once with like a ball body and really thin and long legs... Dandy long legs(?)... I think they are cute :D

Nope me and the spiders have an agreement. They stay on their side of the room and I don't hunt them all down brutally with a hoover. I like to think they have some kind of effigy of me somewhere that they beseech to call down my wrath on rival spiders.

^This bugs me all the time, too, but I don't think a Homosexualphobic makes much sense either because that would be fear of BECOMING gay, so Homophobia is all I can think of that works

Anyway I fucking hate spiders. They're fucking scary as hell to me. Any time I see one it has to be killed right there. One time I saw one, went to get something to smash it with, and it was gone. Needless to say if he had ever climbed on me somehow I would probably light myself on fire.

I'm deathly scared of spiders. Big ones, small ones, medium ones, you name it.

Honestly, the more legs something has the scarier it is. Slugs? Not scary. Man? Only situationally scary. Dogs? Can be scary. Ants? A little unnerving. Spiders? Very unnerving. Centipedes? Heart attack. Millipedes? KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!

I absolutely have a phobia of them.

If I see one, I will cry and hyperventilate until it is gone, and even then, I'll be very uncomfortable for a while in case it comes back or another one appears.

If one is in my bedroom, I have to sleep in a different room, even if the spider is killed (not by me, unless it's by throwing various items at it. Don't want to get too close, I swear they can jump at you).

If something is irrational, it is because it lacks logic. That doesn't have anything to do with popularity.

EDIT: Broke the 10,000 posts mark and I didn't even notice!

I don't mind a spider if it behaves and has the decency to sit still. I wouldn't say I'm scared of them, but I can't abide to have one close to me unsupervised. Have to go get a glass and then completely negating the non-violence; throw it out a window.

Wasps on the other hand... Terror!

Irrational in the context of phobias means it defies logic or reason, not that it's against the norm.

Arachnophobia is an irrational fear because it causes people to be afraid of small creatures that can't necessarily do them any harm.

I'm arachnophobia and experience a flight or fight reaction when I see non-venomous spiders, which can't do me and harm and are probably afraid of me.

Just because lots of people share an illogical belief that defies reason doesn't mean that they're right and their belief is rational.

Spiders don't bother me in the least, however scorpions bug the shit out of me. I don't feel fear towards either. I have only been bit by one spider making it unlikely that I need to fear them (I have had many interactions with spiders and live in a place where black widows are quite common). Scorpions have stung me many times, and while it hurts and I feel the need to kill them when I see them, I don't feel fear towards them. As to your thesis I don't believe that many people have a phobia of arachnids, I think many people fear them, but not an unnatural fear.

My parents took me to see that movie(Arachnophobia) in the theater when I was 10.

Needless to say I don't like spiders inside my home...but honestly I don't like anything insect related in my home. Anything from spiders, bugs, wasps/hornets, whatever I kill as soon as I see em when they're inside. If they're outside and not bothering me I tend to leave them alone.

I can go near them, I can stamp on them, but I would never in my life want to touch one, when any type of insect is on my I generally shake about/kill it.
