The things you were talking about are Daddy Long Legs, they're not spiders. 6 legs and wings.
The spider you were talking about are most likely the harvester spider, so called because they were commonly found with their their freakishly long legs spread between crops around autumn time (harvest season)

;)

OT: I don't like them when their body is any bigger than my thumbnail, but I think that's rational. Oh, and harvester spiders are a bit yuck.

Any spider smaller than that, and I'm game.
Money spiders especially. I used to try and keep them as pets.
Oh yeah. Harvest spider you say?
...I think they are awesome. It tickles when the walk over your arm :D
YOU ARE SICK AND TWISTED
Good for you. :D

I keep tarantulas, "true spiders", scorpions, and other arachnids.

I handle few of them, never potentially dangerous ones, and obviously have no fear of them.
However, not being afraid and being irresponsible with them is completely different.

As for me, I guess you could say I'm arachnophile.

BTW, wouldn't arachnophobe mean someone who is afraid of arachnids?
Shouldn't the fear of spiders be called araneidophobia or the more grammatically correct version of that?
Made me want to run screaming from the room. I'm heavily arachnophobic. Also, am I the only person who saw "Arachnophillia" and was afraid there was going to be a whole new level of creepy animal role-play substituting "Chitinous" for "Furry"?

Why did you mention phillia in the topic, are you wondering if people have an unnatural love of spiders.

I happen to like spiders, in fact I want to take a trip down to Lake Tawakoni State Park.
"Philia" literally means "friendship" and is generally used to refer to a great liking of some things, like bibliophilia meaning you love books.

Although in cases like pedohilia or zoophilia it's used to describe sexual feelings, I don't think that really a correct usage of the word.
Doesn't pedophilia literally mean "loving/liking children"?
Zoophilia sometimes refers to non-sexual love of animals, though.

I guess being a something-phile can mean you like it sexually as well, but not necessarily.
It does have both definitions, the sexual one is more used and what most people will assume you mean.

Speaking of failed phobia labels, "Homophobia" technically means "Irrational fear of things remaining the same".
I cannot tell you how many people I burned with that very comment. :D

A little, but mostly because almost every spider I run into at my home is one of those "oh shiz if it bites you yous gonna die!" ones. We have a lot of black widows, brown recluses and hobo spiders around here XP

A phobia is BEYOND a typical fear RESPONSE! It has nothing to do with the object itself and if fearing it is reasonable. It's the way you respond.
Do you avoid situations where you think spiders might occur? Do you have panic attacks when you see a spider? Has your life had to change based on spiders? (I won't take that super high paying job in Australia! It has spiders!)

It's a very misused suffix.

edit: a Panic attack is like, when you curl in the fetal position and go inside your head and can't interact with people talking with you because you're so consumed by your thoughts and fear. Not just screaming in terror.

Not sure where I read it but I think fear Thanaphobia (or whatever fear of death) Agoraphobia and Aerophobia are the most common. At least by people displaying true phobic symptoms.

I don't mind a spider if it behaves and has the decency to sit still. I wouldn't say I'm scared of them, but I can't abide to have one close to me unsupervised. Have to go get a glass and then completely negating the non-violence; throw it out a window.

Wasps on the other hand... Terror!
Ah fuck...both of them for me.

I'm just a big wimp and I don't want to be stung be a wasp though. I have a complete, self-destroying, break-down-in-terror phobia of spiders.

But I'm fine with scorpions...so am I arachnophobic?

"Irrational" doesn't necessarily mean "uncommon".

Anyway, I have a slight fear of them. I'm perfectly fine with the little ones that I grew up with, but anything larger than about an inch long is just too much for me.

Wikipedia: A phobia (from the Greek: φόβος,phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear") is an irrational, intense and persistent fear of certain situations, activities, things, animals, or people.

Being "irrational", it is expected that relatively few people suffer from the affliction, however, fear of spiders is very common.

This technically means its the "Norm", and not so irrational.

If this is the case, Arachnophobia itself is an oxymoron, and Arachnophillia is the obviously irrational form.

To test this theory, I ask you, Are you Arachnophobic?
But the thing is that very few spiders are even dangerous. And the amount of people that die from spiders are extremely few. How common it is has nothing to do with how rational something is. To fear all spiders is irrational, to fear taratulas or black widows are a lot more rational, but still a bit irrational seeing as how rare it is for them to attack humans. So I still say that arachnaphobia is a phobia. And I do have it, slightly.
Btw, I sooo want to post a picture that will scare me and a lot of other people, but that would be mean.

It depends on the company. In certain circles it's used differently. In some communities of spider/invertebrate enthusiasts it's common to refer to oneself and others in the same hobby as arachnophiles.
And maybe it's just people I hang out with, but words like bibliophilia are commonly used, and no-one will assume they mean people who find books sexy.

But I guess for most people only the term "pedophile" is well-known, and that not only is usually used to refer to sexual things, it has quite a lot of negative connotations on top of that.

True, spiders aren't as dangerous as most people think. Tarantulas (or widows, really) especially aren't that venomous to humans. Some Australian species maybe, but even they aren't exactly deadly.
They are big, so people think they must be dangerous, which isn't true. Even if the fangs are bigger and the amount of venom larger, still, as far as venomous animals go, they aren't even close to the most dangerous(Some snakes and scorpions would come on top of that list, some fish maybe.), and the most venomous spiders aren't tarantulas.
Plus most species kept as pets, the American species in general, are very slow and not defensive, so it's quite easy to avoid getting bit, even if you come face to face with one.

I think irrational fear would be when you know there is no danger in the situation, but that doesn't help at all. It's not rational, after all. If you think that tarantulas will spit venom that will kill you instantly at you from meters away, even though it's not true, fearing them based on that, although wrong information, would be rational.

EDIT: And it's possible to have irrational fear for things that would be dangerous in some situations. For example tigers. If it's fear that makes you unable to watch tv because you're afraid you'll see a tiger in a documentary, or hard to move in a city because you fear that a tiger might have escaped from a zoo, that would be a phobia, I think.

i wouldn't call it irrational, cause I've got a good reason to fear spiders. some are super poisonous and can F you up. when i was a kid i had a friend who was hospitalized by a black widow.

um... did this really happen in real life, cause I've never heard of a spider like that before.

Edit: on second thought don't tell me, I really don't wanna know.

No, spiders don't bother me at all. I do have a healthy amount of respect for the ones that are poisonous enough to be harmful to humans, as anyone should. Luckily, there are no spiders living in the wild around here that are even remotely dangerous.

I do have trypanophobia, or fear of hypodermic needles. Seeing one that I know will be used on me makes my bloodpressure plummet like a meteorite.

I'm alright with "seeing" them. TV I can espcecially deal with, seeing them in life yeah I don't panic. When one touches me you can expect to see a nice smudge where the poor bugger decided to land on me. Then again I'm not a very touchy person so it's not like I just hate spiders but BLIMEY are they arseholes (as Lisa Foiles once pointed out)

So why not let them walk a little on your arm. It is a odd feeling and they can not hurt you :3

I like spiders. Some spiders are beautiful to look at and I think jumping spiders are adorable. I used to be afraid of them when I was little but as I learned more about them I learned to respect and apreciate what facinating ceatures they realy are.
Same here. Heck, when out out my cottage in the summer I keep a fair share of spiders in the screen room to eat up the mosquitoes. And nothing fascinates more than watching a spider spin a web.

Damn you to hell!

I usually live in Norway and was afraid of the spiders there. Now I live in the U.K, it's remarkable how they differ in size, the ones here are like freaking behemoths in comparisson.
