in a small town, small town values will reign.
big whoop.
most small towns are not THAT far from a big town, which will usually have an arcade.
besides, most arcade games can be played on a computer emulator, MAME software, old/used arcade cabinets bought cheaply, or just replaced by better, newer games.
i can go to big 5 and buy a little joystick thing that plugs into my tv and plays pacman, galatica, and all those other truly great classic games.
for about $10-$20, depending if it's on sale or not.
Thats the thing, personal gaming is fine, sure buy you 20 dollar device. But you can not put a public device up for someone to play, that is illegal. A local resident that voted against the ban doesn't like having to drive 30 miles to Boston.
i do disagree with the idea, but i must sadly admit that the town apparently does have the right.
then again, now that games are art, i wonder what'll happen?
can't wait to see a pac-man cabinet at the Louvre.

If the town outlaws gambling and lists arcade games under "gambling peripherals" it can.

Still, this is pretty tame compared to the law in Alabama that says it is illegal to wear a fake moustache that causes laughter in church. Or the one from the same state that says putting salt on a railroad track may be punishable by death.

Now that games are considered art, they are infringing upon the freedom of expression, and must therefore...must be burned at the stake.

Mmm, quite.
Indeed.

But all I can say is that this government must know of Polybius.
I had heard of this game myself. Suppose to be some sort of a mind-fuck, nyes? Even still, the mold was quite broken on that game. They wouldn't find this to be a viable precident.

I guess i didn't understand it when I was a kid, but ya all the arcades in Mass left sometime in the early nineties. And any that crop up seem to be bar/pool halls.

So basically the article in a nutshell is this: A group of stick in the mud prudes use their own subjective bias to pass legislation to ensure everyone conforms to their ideas. By this merit I should find a group of people who dislike whatever these people like and ban it in the same fashion. Sometimes the childish route is the better route.

You mean playing video games as a kid -> pornography?
Someone probably already said this, but...

If that's their reasoning...This law is doing the opposite of what it's trying to do. Because if the kids don't have video games...What do you think they'll be doing with their time?

I still live in a dry town (you have to go to a shady convience store right outside the town limit just to get beer).

It sucks, and no town should be able to ban art.

Games are now art. You're not allowed to ban art.

Follow your own laws american town!
Yes therefor their law is now null en void. I suggest someone drive down there with a pack man or space invaders arcade machine and play it in the town center. bring a copy of the new law and maybe notify your lawyer buddy.

Ran across a post about a town that made arcade games illegal 29 years ago, and they voted recently to keep the ban in place. This is the most insan form of censorship I have seen in a while. Here is the article if you are interested.

Do you think it is Constitutional to ban arcade games?
And what is your opinion of this subject?

Seems really stupid so I guess it's a good thing arcades are obsolete.
It isnt a good thing arcades are practically dead expect for Japan, there are some really fantastic games that are arcade games and modern gaming is a worse place for the general lack of them.

At first glimpse it looks like an idiotic law, but to be honest there are usually reasons to the seemingly ridiculous old laws which float to the surface from time to time, and arcades, at least in my own experience, did tend to attract an anti-social element. (Who don't even PLAY the games, which makes matters worse.) I do know that it was certainly a factor in closing a few local arcades where I lived in the late 90s.

With such a relatively small town, if such an environment has consistently become a spawning ground for fuckheads and developers/business owners don't seem to be implementing any features to minimize resultant damage as a result of said troglodytes, then the council has a duty of care to implement appropriate legislature to ensure the safety and security of surrounding people and property.

And like many others have said. It doesn't affect consoles or home PCs, so really how much of a fuck would joe average really give? Is there anything an arcade offers besides a novelty interface you can't get better, faster and cheaper on a home system these days?
