"A Gamer Girl" or "Girl Gamer" as I'm sure a few of you know is a female gamer who seperates themselves from the gender-neutrallity that the anonymity of the internet and online gaming offers by advertising their gender. Despite the fact that no men seem to do this (well some do but it is a dig at girl gamers [footnote]http://steamcommunity.com/groups/menwhoplaygames[/footnote])
I didn't pick my name because I was poking fun at females who advertise their genders. It's just my name.

Yet this problem can be and often is solved by just resulting to the gender neutrallity which the internet offers.
Yeah, I shouldn't mention I'm black either. I tend to hear ****** a lot more that way. This is how we should solve racism! Just don't tell anyone I'm black -.-

It's so stupid it hurts. Females campaign for equality in gaming because many of them want to be treated equally but instead alot of them go and create a "Girl's clubhouse" situation. When was the last time male gamers did that? (and not in a joking way. If you have any examples I'll take that statement back but I couldnt find any)

So I ask you this. Are "Gamer gurls" shooting themselves in the foot? By that I mean they want equality but are going about it the wrong way.
Abso-friggin-lutely not. There is no excuse for acting like a total buffoon, even if the girl is cute or you have the anonymity of the internet to protect your creepy ass. YES girls who tease guys like the above example are kinda assholes, but this should in no way be used to say , as I believe you are here, that that kind of behavior is asking for all female gamers to be treated like shit. There's teasing back to girls who act like that, but guys go wayyyy too far, wayyy too often, just because they can, even if they're not "provoked".

So no. Just no.
But the essence of what's being said is; that it won't change, ever, at all. So the best solution is to not give away this information for it to be abused by kids and horny males in the first place.

Besides, most people who use the word '******' aren't even really racist, same as 'fag' and not being homophobic (At least from the vast majority of my experience on the internet and real life). I'm neither of these, but use both words as a form of cursing and a form of... How to explain it... Subtle/friendly disapproval.

I think far too many people now just point the finger at someone and call them an 'ism' without even knowing what the definition of the 'ism' really is at all. I know America does this to a large extent, especially on the gaming market (Resident Evil, Left 4 Dead 2).

let them do what the hell they like I say, after all its not like we have a choice. Whatever they do or don't do however the fact will remain that there are very large numbers of randy teenage blokes who are gamers and they're not likely to change their stripes any time soon.

I've always regarded female gamers, even the ones that go out of their way to display their rampant femininity and are thus the top of this thread, the same way I regard all gamers: I ignore them. Personally, I don't care about female gamers because I'm not one.
At any rate, they do often tend to shoot themselves in the foot in the sense that they are going about acquiring equal treatment the wrong way, and by the wrong way I mean asking for it at all. We're on the internet, the only way to achieve equal treatment is to achieve anonymity. For example, people like me and you, who clearly care what other people think about what we say or we wouldn't be saying it, are likely to be viewed as pompous or self-righteous and generally regarded as pricks, but we don't feel that way and we don't care. Also, furries. They most certainly don't get equal treatment, and this is entirely because they ***** about equal treatment. What both of these groups have in common are safe-havens where they interact almost exclusively with people like them.
I propose that gamer girls should do the same, and, from what I understand, that is precisely what they often do. Can't be treated unequally by your peers, can you? Well... yes you can, but not to the extent they complain about. On the whole, gamer girls are going to have to shut up or go away if they want equal treatment. If they want to be outspoken and prideful about who they are, they have to be prepared for the consequences, i.e., horny, slobbering men who want to make digital babies with them.

Since I'm very aquainted with the Xbox Live community in general, I see these "Gamer Gurls" more often than I can take. A girl talking about how she's a gamer is indeed annoying, but wanting to talk about a relevant topic as interesting, might be girls in general...

Which leaves me to say: Women...

Here's what I think, and I'm a girl who plays games and a gamer girl (I don't advertise persay, but if asked I will tell my gender, although most people assume due to my username.)

If you admit you are a girl, you need to be prepared for the insults/jokes/banter that comes with that revelation. If you can't handle it, then you just learned your lesson. It's tough, but that's how it is. I'm not sure if that will ever change unless girls become as mainstream in games as guys do. But basically, if you can't handle the consequences of your actions, simply don't mention it. :)
Hear hear! Straight from the horse's mouth (No insult intended).

Gamer girls are just femenists (female attention whores) who like games.
I hate femenists.

Girls, just because a bunch of stupid 13-year-olds insult you for being a girl online doesn't mean its not accepted, its just a covenient way to insult you, and really thats all they want to do (the little shits)

I don't know why people even keep discussing the issue.
Just shut up and let them play games.

Only reason girl gamers is an issue is because people keep talking about it.
Hahaha what!

I have nothing against girls who just get on with it and play games like everyone else. If you'd bothered to read it you would've seen the issue is girls advertising their gender then complaining when it has negative effects. Take the time to read something before you tell someone to shut up
Yeah they're making an issue of it.
Now you're making an issue of them making an issue of it.

When it shouldn't be an issue in the first place.

Who cares.

And I didn't read your post, it's just another "re: girls playing games" thread. I read about the first sentence. But then again you didn't read my post either as I never said anything about you having anything against girls playing games.
I'm not making an issue of it, its been around for quite a while you just haven't noticed. I'm sure a few of the responses in this thread affirm that. So you've basically just said I didn't read your post but I'm going to argue with you anyway. Brilliant, and I did read your post so don't try and pass that off as a reason either. I may have worded my response wrong so I'll edit it in this quote just to make it clear.

Personally could not give a rats about the gender of the people im playing with, as long as they aren't pants-on-head retarded.
I lol'd.

Well, I'm not going to type out some huge rant about how these bitches are annoying. I think it's all been said, and I don't feel the need to type it over again(truth is I don't give a shit and I'm too tired).

What ought to be the issue is the overall behavior of male gamers. I'm seeing people here posting dismissively about the "girl's clubhouse" approach they think some girl gamers take; what do you think 99% of public game rooms are? Every single joke is meant to offend as many people as possible other than straight male gamers. Nobody is supposed to raise a voice in protest. Why? Because this is the internet, dammit, and this is supposed to be the boys' playground exclusively. Ridiculous.

The problem is not girl gamers. The problem is an environment where most girls figure they're better off taping their mouths shut before they log in.

It is quite strange that females want to constantly make profiles or names that reveal their gender. A great example is a lot of the girls that play shooters will put things in their profile like, "You just got domed by a girl", or "Yes, girls play shooters too", for no apparent reason.

I do not care what gender or ethnicity the people I am playing with or against happen to fall into. But it's pretty hypocritical for females to constantly complain about being segregated from the rest of the gaming community, or being looked down on, yet insist on bragging about their gaming abilities and attach their gender with it.

Am I supposed to be impressed that you're a girl that is good in a game? Wasn't I supposed to recognize your skills for just that, and not attach it to your gender? Why make a "girls only" clan or guild which goes against gender equality?

It's all hypocrisy and it sets everyone back a great deal, because it baits guys into messing with them, and creates a void at the same time.

I hit on every girl I meet. Does it matter that I'm gay? Not at all, the end results are always worth whatever shit I get.

I've never encountered a "Gamer Grrl". Most of the girls I've met are in MMO's since girls usually don't plug their mikes in, which just pissed me off. I'll be playing LFD or some co-op game and OH look, no one has their mike in, or their in their own party. So annoying. But the girls who play guys in MMO's are hilarious. They act like just guys who play girls, running around in their underwear propositioning people.

i have a few so called "gamer girl"s as good friends and i dont think they shoot themselves in the foot by talking online or having their gamertag be gender specific. then again our "clan" has gamertags like myselenagomez and mydemilovato so you cant be sure until you talk to them

Yeah, gotta agree with the OP. No one gets equality by advertising their gender. If girl gamers treat themselves as just gamers, eventually others will too. I know it's not an easy find, but it's better than being the stereotypical attention seeking "girl gamer" who only plays CoD.

Yes, I believe "Gamer girls" are shooting themselves in the foot head foot. To me, gamer girls are girls who play videogames because they want boys to fawn over the fact that they play videogames, not because they truly enjoy it. And to be perfectly honest, I hate them with a passion because they make girls who play videogames look bad. I'm a girl, but I never make it a point to hide my gender or expect anyone to treat me differently because of it, so encountering girls who expect guys to pamper them and treat them special because they have two X chromosomes and happen to know how to use an XBox controller infuriates me to no end. It also reminds me why I have so few girl friends. It's just sad to think of how many vapid, materialistic whores are out there, and how they have to invade one of the last havens for intelligent females to satiate their need for attention and ruin the experience for so many gamers. And honestly, if they get harassed or made fun of, it's their fault for broadcasting their gender and acting like a ***** expecting to be treated like a queen.
I couldn't have said it better. I am a girl myself, and I never thought it really mattered what gender the gamer was as long as they never made a point to throw it in other gamers' faces. That is a bad thing to do, and anyone who does has to face the stupidity of some of the people on the internet.

Games are becoming increasingly more unisex, and I'm glad that there are more girl gamers out there. If anything all these outspoken gamer girls are helping to make gaming seem less of a guy-thing. Though if Playstation Home has taught me anything its that men still outnumber the girls...

It's like walking alone though a dark alleyway at night wearing a suit made of hundred dollar bills. You have every right to walk where you please in the garb that you choose, but you can't be that intelligent if you expect not to get mugged. You really can't complain when people react in a predictable manner, especially if you are practically inviting it. If your username is "CuteyGurl91" expect to get hit on. If your name is "BlackAndProud22" you may get called a ****** once or twice. We all wish it weren't so, but it is. Pick a different name, and get over it.

Anytime anyone on the internet puts specific attention on something they are incredibly proud of people will make fun of them for it, simple as that.
