We do this with our movies also, how appropriate is it then that Gaming movies and movie games are becoming so frequent. And about the "safe" aspect of most main stream games agree, but for every Halo, their is a Psychonauts.MausGMR said:
Well for it broke no kind of mold, it was very similar to Farcry but in a different engine. it felt more like a tech demo than anything else. I don't want to be to hard on it however its one of the only truly hard game series out right now, and most mainstream game you can take 14 shots to the head, be OK, then go chill somewhere for a few moments and go get shot a hundred times more.vivaldiscool said:

To be honest, although good games are still being made, we're not getting the ground breaking classics like before - Ok, ground gets broken, but by mediore games instead of great ones, and as a result innovanive games get rarer - Mass Effect, whilst newish and good, for example, did adjust the formula for Action-RPGs, but really didn't break the model. About the only really new game that was also good was World of Goo, and I'm tired of the only innovantion going into indie puzzle games.

Games are getting better, but in relative to potential, they are getting worse.
Its like comparing a collage students paper to an elementary school student's paper.
The guy in collage may be doing a lot more in general and deliver a better product,
but the elementary school kid may be doing more with what they have.

I'd say they got to a point then most devs, kind of, went with the same formula but with different numbers, in other words making things inter-changeable, as Yahtzee has said many time(Like one time, the angry traffic barrier.
There are the occasional games that bring the golden thing, INNOVATION! Very few games do it now though.

With the whole generational console set-up, we have this odd set-up of gaming taking a leap forward and then dancing sideways. There is also a larger restriction on original thinking, everything seems to be becoming a series franchise or is already a part of one.
Games are getting better, I agree but they're like a needle in a haystack. For every good game that is produced, their seems to be 5 more that are pathetic. Maybe if we get out of mass production mode and think of quality first, we'd get better games AND they could be mass produced.
But for now, I just hope that I can keep finding those needles.

In answer to your question, a resounding yes. Fallout 3, Call of Duty 4, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto 4, Saints Row 2, Overlord: Raising Hell, Crysis, Super Mario Galaxy. I could go on for quite a while.
Although the original Crysis might be a bit bland, it still stands as a top-tier FPS both in presentation and gameplay. Crysis: Warhead even moreso, in my opinion.
The sheer number of options you have for approaching situations, different weapons, attachments, suit modes, and tactics give the game a lot of replayability. When I think of next-gen games, I think Crysis.

Games are both getting better AND worse. Games can be large, exciting, offer more replay value, have more options, ect. My personal example for this is GTA4. Then you have pretty much EVERYTHING on the Wii. Remakes, quickly designed for casual game play, lacking replay value, bad visuals, limited options, ect. Casual gaming is the cancer of the gaming industry.
