I think that a lot of games are relying more on shiny graphics, familiar characters, new and more realistic physics engines, and really big "assets" (in some cases) than they are on story and game play.
Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of games that are out now, but there aren't very many that make me go "HOLY MOTHER OF ZEUS, I MUST POSSESS THAT GAME!"
(Except for the new Batman: Arkham Asylum game... But that's just the Batfan in me.)

Even if they're just as fun today, they have still been dumbed down and they still rarely have a storyline that can hold a candel to the older games.

There's also less in the way of open ended gameplay now, and that's a major dissapointment because most of you have never experienced true open ended gameplay the way that games like Fallout, Gothic, Arcanum, Romancing Saga, and other such games provided.

Maybe it's our fault, maybe people are just becomming more and more stupid with each generation. Maybe todays standards for deep and innovative gameplay is having some emo boy with a big sword swinging wildly next to an attractive under dressed girl with lots of voice overs and explosions in the background. Gamers don't like to read or think anymore, and they're increasingly content with the cliche and the mediocre.

My biggest complaint about videogames isn't that they're less fun it's that they're dumbed down, but is the average gamer is really as dumb as companies like Electronic Arts seem to think, the problem isn't the games or the industry, it's the gamer.
