If realism can be used to gain moar funs, then I'm all for it.

If my fun is compromise because it's unrealistic... screw realism.

Or, in other words:

1. Realism works in some games, in others it doesn't. I wouldn't say games are becoming "too realistic", no, because in the games that are considered realistic, you can still have half your head shot off and continue fighting, provided you hid behind a cardboard box for a few seconds.

2. His name is Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, not Ben Yahtzee.

3. How stoned were you when you came up with the poll options? I realise there's an obligation to have a joke option, but you had about four of them, and none of them were funny.

If games were realistic we wouldn't play them. Drywall can't stop rifle rounds, guns jam, police are not shit shots or shitty drivers and bullets hurt.

Not really.

Graphics are becoming better and better but games still aren't realistic.

It's just that devs are obsessed with guns and the real world.

Although that's probably because most devs are American.

Real life and the game world are 2 completely different mediums. As Yahtzee said:

"I thought we abandoned realism around the time space marines were stabbing dinosaurs on the planet Zog."

For the love of god.

One day people are saying "OMG THIS GAME IS TOO FAKE!"

The next day the same fucking people are saying "THIS IS TOO FUCKING REAL!"

Make up your damn minds or go make the game yourself.

my 2 cents.

They are almost to realistic, there not quite there yet. however this only applies to some games, for instance a very realistic racing game is great. It's the horror games that might get to relastic. Action games however are like the middle ground where in some cases it's not realistic enough and in other cases its not, for example GTA 4 allows you to drive drunk some say this is too realistic and teaches kids (?) that driving drunk is ok, I say it teachs people that driving drunk is really frick'n hard. on the other hand your character's stupid friends are way too realisticly annoying.

On realistic gore, there can never be to realistic.

On the topic of your character he has to be able to fit at least every gun in the game in his pocket, and he has to be able to take an extreamly large ammout of bullets, fire, whatever.

In closing some parts of video games need to be realistic and others not so much.

He only meant that for GTA 4. No they aren't getting too realistic. I like games that are more down to earth and use terrestial technology not any of the laser beam weapons.

No, i think the problem is more that games are prepared to sacrifice fun for realism.

Id be happy to play a non realistic game if its fun.

If by realistic, you mean less fantasy or less-likely possibility when compared to reality, then I think that there are plenty of "non-realistic" concepts in games out there. But if you mean that the graphics, sound, etc., look and sound realistic, then I really cant imagine games looking much better graphic-wise than what we have today.

Yeah, I gotta nitpick on the title too.
The better question is, "Are forum users becoming too illiterate?"

I don't think so.

Besides, isn't the fact that it is unrealistic part of what makes a game fun?

If you're looking at the visuals, I don't think a realistic enviroment ruins a game. I don't think realism is a problem, as long as it fits in the world. If you look at LittleBigPlanet, the items are really detailled and pretty-looking, but that's not a bad thing. Also, the characters in Final Fantasy 13 look great, but they still fit in that fantasy world with proper clothing and such.

If you're looking at it gameplay-wise, I really think it's a problem if games become too realistic. Why would you want to play the exact same thing you can do in real life? The biggest example of this illness is Grand Theft Auto 4.

The frontier is not so much graphics, it's AI and physics. So no, games aren't getting too realistic. For me, realistic means a plethora of possible outcomes and unique possibilities, which impact your avatar and other NPC's behaviourally and physically. Agents using natural language algorithms, on the spot flexible decision making and emotional capacity. It doesn't mean that a rock has to look like an actual rock. That's so last century. If it behaves like an actual rock - now that's realism.
