Games havent gotton any easier, we just get better at them. I grew up with the likes of DooM, when played on hard, that game destroys me.

Then some 10 years later, playing anything that isnt as insane as DooM is a walk in the park. Because I'v become so accustomed to fighting the impossible horeds of hell, by nature, I put all my efort into every battle.

No. Nowadays most games let you choose your difficulty setting, and in most games you usually can tell the difference between difficulties. "I play on normal because that's the way the game is meant to be played, and it's too easy/hard!" Well then stop being stupid and change the difficulty, you tart.

Not to mention a good deal of modern gaming is focused on multiplayer, and the challenge of that is equal to the skill level of your opponents, so unless "you are teh 1337!" that should be pretty consistently challenging, especially if the game actually tries to match you with players of the same skill level (Halo, Starcraft, etc.)

ive been wondering about this for a while now, since my first mainstream console (SNES :D) it feels as if games are getting easier and easier. Now, i wasnt sure if this was just due to experience or if developers are just plain lazy now so i whipped out Goldeneye for N64 and couldnt complete it on 00 Agent (hardest difficulty), wondering if this is just me
Get super meat boy and then tell me how games have gotten easy.

which CoD are you talking about? cos i found MW2 insanely easy even on veteran but CoD4 i couldnt get past Hardened
The last few CoD's are a very good way to see how difficulty in an FPS works: as you said CoD4's hardened mode was really difficult because they had that system of constantly spawning enemies until you advanced against them. MW2 was pretty easy for the most part. However, i couldn't get past the first 3 levels of Black Ops in 'hardened' because, unlike CoD4, the difficulty is just "stupidly done"; You're sprinting to cover.Boom! bullet to head. You're crouching behind cover.Boom! bullet to head. you're pushing a barrel at the enemy thus getting RID of your cover. Boom! you guessed it. (Seriously, F*&k Khe sanh). I never played World at War, but I've heard that it spawns grenades near you. Not throws, spawns. As in, on your lap, while you're sitting inside of a bunker.

Maybe they´re getting a bit easier, yes.

In the old days you didnt have save points. That meant you had to play the game from start to finish on a single try. Streets of Rage comes to mind...

I've always thought games needed to be less toys and more experiences. And high difficulty in games is like a book that interrupts the story to make you read a page of mathematical equations every now and then.

Modern difficulty is awesome. It presents challenge and provides satisfaction to the player without dropping the pace into a dark, deep, wet canyon every time the player makes a mistake.

If anything, it's harder to make a game easy than it is to make it hard. And old games just had fake difficulty (lives, bugs, no checkpoints in levels) that didn't make the experience rewarding.

Of course, it's such a long time ago that you tend to forget the bad and just remember the good... :)

I believe he majority of games seem hard because of other factors about the game but once you get to the nitty gritty their extremely easy.

I like a wide range of difficulty options....but the hardest difficulty should always be ridiculously difficult.

DKRC is the most challenging game I've played recently by far.....and beating the game is only about 10% of the challenge....... Anybody who loves platformers and wants to push their limits go pick it up......I'll just say don't trust the % complete at the file select screen.

You want a hard game? Try playing Super Meat Boy. That game isn't easy in the slightest.
It's also not the rule. Though I love it to pieces. Small, meaty pieces.

On the other hand, I'm not sure games have gotten all that much easier overall. Some have, but part of it is we adapted to games as well. I went back to some of those games that used to kill me over and over, and they don't seem so bad anymore. Some games were truly "Nintendo Hard," and those can still be a problem, but most games that seemed daunting when I was a kid are now, almost literally, child's play.

I think most games nowadays you determine how hard a game is via difficulty options (or in the case of MGS the things required for a big boss runs) where as alot of games before used to give you no option. You played the game the developer wanted you to play.

Often it would be hard in the challenging sense, and so as you had no choice but to adapt and improve you would get further and enjoy the game for what it was more. All in all you felt a sense of achievement for besting those games.

Nowadays you can choose easy and you can complete a game in no time, with none of the challenge or satisfaction and then after choose harder diffuclties retracing familiar steps which again ruins the point of the initial experience imo.

However there are always exceptions, Demon's souls being one, that game is extremely challenging and constantly forces you to improve and consequently the satisfaction in completing it is immeasurable and far superior than finishing COD or a modern game on a hard difficulty setting.

On average I think most games are pretty well balanced, it's not the the games are getting easier it's that the gamers are getting better. Which is why adjustable difficulty settings are nice because if you're not getting enough challenge then just ramp it up a little.
