Yes. It eternally pisses me off that priveleged little shits found throughout developed coutries happily cultivate a culture where school is seen as a boring thing to be avoided - because education is uncool etc - while at the same time there are kids in other parts of the world who walk 10 miles to an understaffed and undersupplied school because they want to learn and improve their lives.

I'd happily solve this by making education cost more - offset by reducing income tax by an amount to cover the extra expense people would pay to send kids to school - and so make the parents more responsible for making sure their kid goes to school and engages with their education.

Here in America (specifically New York) I try my hardest in school and get high moderate to Good grades (amazing in Social Studies. :D) but I noticed many, seem to not give a damn in the world and just hang about, getting drunk, getting low grades, talking when teachers talk, just overall just not seeming to care that High School will have effect on their lives.

Many skip classes, go about doing stupid things, and just never seem to get the memo that they aren?t going to be successful. I school has made these PSA things about staying in class, doing work, etc, and while they?re cheesy, there true.

No matter it seems how much they push that school is important, it seems like many kids just don?t care and then walk away with their pants slightly down and thinking they?re ?gangster.? It just sickens me and I almost fear for our generation.

I can?t speak from experience but I assume it?s not as bad in foreign countries.
The word you are looking for is "Granted"
Granite is a from of hard rock.

I think the main reason for a lot of the things you list is not really to do with taking school for granted, but a lack of discipline both at school and at home. Most kids these days have very few boundaries etc.

It's not just America. Denmark has it too. A lot of it at my school.

My attitude towards it is that you have a responsibility for your own learning. All the effort in the world on the teacher's part won't do anything for a truly unmotivated student.

But hey, we need people to clean our public toilets and wipe our senior citizens' bums, after all.

(nice one on the granite joke, btw)

Well, I wish I could get some granite just for going to my college classes. That would give me something to sell.

You win one Internets for that post.

I came here to post that response, but of course was beaten to it.

I just hope this thread's title is an intentional joke...

I think what people really take for GRANTED is the social development. Sure you can be a shut in and study all the time, and I do encourage aiming for good grades. But its one of the last time's you will have to be around people for extended times. And after that, its a lot harder to make decent relationships (connections, not just romantic) with a wide range of people.

So yeah, some people waste the education opportunity. But just don't miss the friendships and experiences that go along with it.

Also.

Nope, my school's not even made of granite, and even if it was, there's no way I would be taking any pieces of it with me.

Do you really think former generations payed attention in school?

Seriously, look at all the older figures in public society who have a lack of understanding basic history or biology, but keep getting put in positions of power.

Wow, this question really puts me between a rock and a hard place. Of course nothing is set in stone just yet, but I'm sure I can chip away at the issue and get down to the bedrock, so to speak.

Are kids taking school for granite?
Maybe, I guess?...
[sub]I mean, some schools oughta be made of granite, right?[/sub]

OT: School is granted though. It's given to them for free, and they have to do absolutely nothing for the priviliege of going to school. It is granted to them.
Yeah, I'm arguing semantics, I know what you mean.

Lot's of kids today seem to think they can get by in life without good grades; and to some extent they're right. You can become a wealthy businessman with minimal education (note: can), and if you go to a vocational school, you can get a well-paid job without necessarily being scholastically talented (electrician, carpenter etc.).
Then again, kids who go about skipping school and fucking around in class and get bad grades on account of that annoy me.
I can't bring myself to hate them completely though; because I know with myself that if it wasn't for the fact that I manage to score top grades without really doing homework or anything, I might have been one of them. I'm not exactly the most hard-working kind when it comes to schoolwork.
But I digress, it may be that my laziness simply comes from my ability to learn easily.

I say no since it is the school reputation that can lead to the pupils downfall. It up to them to discpline them better.
Ok granted it their own fault for they own desmise but being kids they just haven't mature fully yet.

There are always those that can't be bothered and do bad.
Even worse are the ones who can't be bothered and still got top grades.

I'm like that too, but I call BS. We are just lazy.

EDIT: Not to sound mean or assuming.
