I think the problem is you have to find a critic who likes the same things you do. Critics aren't superhuman. At least, I am pretty sure they aren't. So they are just like us, with preferences for certain types of films.

If you can, look at the past reviews of several critics. If they have reviewed a number of movies you loved favorably, then start following their blog, or articles or however they publish their reviews. They won't overlap you 100%, but this will help you getter a better idea of what you might be willing to go to the theaters to see.

As to whether or not they are out of touch, I think there have always been reviewers who tend to look at movies and grade them based on their artistic merit rather than their mass appeal. This is just a particular type of reviewer. They will always be around, because some people really like those types of movies.

Movie critics are out of touch with what people want to see. Usually because what critics want to see is art, and people don't have any desire to see art, but would rather be simply entertained.

There are movies that I consider to be artistic that get bad reviews by critics, and maybe I'm just culturally inept- it doesn't really matter to me. However, this usually is the reason why some popular movies get poor reviews.

Personally I feel critics can be hit or miss. Critics pay a lot more attention to the basic elements that make up movies, which I usually do myself. I guess since I'm a film student I pay more attention to critics. That said I also feel that sometimes they miss the fun in movies, or disregard a film because its just a stupid, but enjoyable, film. I usually just take reviews with a grain of salt and try to figure out myself if its worth seeing a film or not.

Anyone can be a movie critic, it's just the ones who are paid to do so that are out of touch.
And I hate Rotten Tomatoes. Those people just suck at reviews.

Maybe you just like "shitty movies"?

Maybe the movie critics are out of touch with what you "want to see"?
That might be very true, but they are also out of touch with what my friend and family want to see as well to the point that I don't know one person who still cares what they say, and from twhat I can tell that means they sorta fail at their jobs.
Since your friends and family constitute the entire global viewing public.
You seem like a bit of a prick, what's wrong with him expressing his opinion?

Why should critics give a shit about what people want to see? They're here to judge a movie on its merits, not to judge it by its popularity.
I think you are just being bitter, no offense.
Also, most of my favorite movies were generally well-met by critics, and I'm not even a movie geek. I can prove it - my favorite movie of all-time is The Rock (yes, I know, Michael Bay, so?) and it's one of the few Bay movies that were pretty well-received.

I usually go into a movie with the intent of enjoying it then critique it afterward. It would have to be a truly bad movie for me to not enjoy it while watching it for the first time. I don't think they're out of touch though, I mean it's all just opinion in the end so it's hard to really say anything.

I for one can't stand the violent/gory parts in movies and don't like them as much when they do include them. Example: Inglourious Basterds. The scalping scenes and any real melee/blade weapon scene could have been left out or just have been done off-screen and I think it would have been almost perfect.

I might be but it is a bit disappointing when I feel I cant rely on then to tell me if a movie is entertaining or not, but that's what I feel

Also The Rock kicks ass, one of my favorite movies ever.

I don't go see movies to often so like you I go and do want to enjoy them, recently the only movie I haven't liked when watching it was the new Star Trek remake, hell even as bad as Legion was it was still mindlessly entertaining in a "oh look at how many people they are shooting" kind of way(it sorta reminded me of survivor mode on L4D.

I also agree with what you are saying with the violent/gory parts in some movies, if the good guys are doing it like in Law Abiding Citizen then I don't have a problem, but if the bad guy is as in Saw or Hostile then I can't stand it, honestly they could do it so much more effectively if they just hinted about it like then did in Silence of the Lambs.

Movie critics aren't out of touch, we're just taking their opinion a little bit to serious.

They're not the movie-law, they're JUST CRITICS nothing more.
