What it is, is a classic logical fallacy, one big argument from ignorance. "This stuff is like this, well how else can you explain it!? Therefore, it must be spirits!" "Lightning bolts in the sky!? That guy said it was Zeus, and well, I don't have a better explanation, so it must be Zeus!" That's not thinking outside the box, it's certainly not looking for any possibilities, it's not even thinking within reason - It is just completely asinine... It is not unfair to have a bias towards truth, not unfair to have a bias towards things that are scientifically demonstrable, nor is it unfair to discriminate against bat-shit crazy ideas that happen to be popular with somebody.
Nicely put. Personally, however, I like to leave the word "truth" out of science. Truth is a subjective abstract. I like to sum it up as such: "Leave truth to the philosophers. Get all the facts, and the truth will sort itself out."

Well, you'll be wasting your money on superstitious BS, so unless you count that as dangerous, then no. The movements of the planchette are just caused by mostly unnoticeable movements of your hands. It's just like the myth of being able to tell the gender of a pet bird by holding a pendulum over it; your hand will cause the movement you expect. Similarly, the stories are fueled by confirmation bias: you wind up focusing on the few semi-intelligible results, and dismissing the majority of nonsense.

It's less dangerous than a black cat crossing the road or walking under a ladder. Wich isn't dangerous to begin with. I would hope that in this modern world we would rid ourselves of old superstitious beliefs like ouija boards, black cats and selling your soul. Face it, you sold it when you purchased your first apple-product.

I answered yes, not because I know the history of the boards or if anything about them is actually true, but because I live in a house where shit happens all the time and I wouldn't ever attempt to use one inside these 4 walls.

The fact my house is built on top of a monk burial ground doesn't help at all...

then by all means. go and burn one. and a real one, not this shitty game board one you can buy. a Ouija board is meant to be made by hand from wood.

anyway, all of you have obviously never used one in it's proper way. (and no, i wont tell you how)
If you make me one from real wood and mail it to me I will burn it or poop on it or whatever other thing you think will anger the spirit realm and post the video of all the nothing that happens afterwards on youtube.*

(cue I WOULD NEVER DO THAT BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WOULD BEFALL YOU WOE BETIDE YOU OH UNBELIEVERRRRRRRRRR)

* I can't guarantee that nothing would happen, my cat may jump into the field of view briefly, he likes to jump on things. Also the air conditioner might turn on.

Yes, the corners of the board are very sharp, and could easily be used to stab people....

My sarcasm is adequated to this question... cuz i don't know if this post is trolling, or just really stupid...

Cracked has just published an article about the Ouija board today, I think it is relevant to this topic. Excuse me if some one already posted it. I personally don't believe in anything related to mysticism, or any other version of such thing. But to each their own I suppose.

No. And since the Escapist mods give you warnings for short answers, how about NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. NONONONONONONO. So much no, that: NO.

Yes they can be dangerous. I'm a Christian, and I found out the hard way that messing with stuff like Ouija boards can invite unwanted guest into your home.

There is nothing dangerous with divination, despite what fiction portrays. I am always surprised how afraid people are of anyone 'knowing the future.' I suppose most people on The Escapist will just relegate divination in the 'supernatural nonsense box' at any rate, so the discussion seems somewhat moot.

I don't believe in Ghosts so, I'm going to say no. Any strange occurrence is due to your state of mind. Hey, a strange sound has been heard, while you are doing the Ouija board. Strange sounds happen all the time, but because it happened during this, you react to it accordingly.

That being said, I still don't want to do one, because I don't trust my mind because it likes to play really mean jokes on me.

Well, you can hit someone with it, but otherwise, no.

I assume you mean supernatural danger. I got news for you, the supernatural, by definiton, does not exist. It means beyond nature, but everything in the universe is nature. So anything beyond the universe isn't in the universe, and everything that exists is in the universe, so the supernatural cannot exist.

Potheads scouring for food that forgot what they were doing and wanted to play with the Ouija board?

The ONLY record of it ever being dangerous wasn't actually accurate. The Exorcist. It's influenced the culture around the Ouija board ever since. In the 40's it was a very popular family game, much like monopoly. The whole family would gather to play it. But since the Exorcist, and some obscure stories about a voodoo witch in America owning one, it's been deemed as an evil comm to the devil.

No a demon is not going to possess you and then to fertilise your close female companion to bring his evil spawn into the world. I think you have been watching too many cheesy horror movies.

I am a logical person
I feel it's a level of energy that we all carry which cannot be scientifically measured.
These two statements are completely at odds with one another. Logic dictates that all things can be scientifically measured.
I also stated it might sound like double-speak. I should instead say, it's a level of energy that we have yet to figure out how to measure accurately or at all. And again, we're not all sensitive to it. Less-sensitive, logical thinkers would be even more inclined to disregard it.

But what happens when you feel or experience an external, invisible force or energy that you can't logically explain? You've taken all variables into account, you're both physically and mentally healthy, thoroughly investigated your environment, and come up with diddly-squat. Now what?
