Blu ray is not a fad that's correct but the times of optical disc's and disc drives of any kind are nearing there end. The way the internet and technology as a whole moves forward is a way to innovate and expand the current technologies. There was an announcment not so long ago where they were going to release a "console" that you didnt buy games for. You downloaded them and streamed it in a lag free environment. Everything was held server side meaning that you didn't need any graphics capability at all everything was streamed at max quality. Thus eliminating the disc. If it's done right then it will change the way we play games.
People are still going to want some physical media. There will be those that are slow to adapt and understand "put the disc in and press play". Even beyond that, they'll eventually start selling blank Blu-Ray discs for all the stuff we use blank CDs and DVDs now.

I agree with what you said about the streaming media console. That's entirely possible now and very likely for the future. My only question is who is this "They" that you speak of?

I like that console makers are trying hard this generation. It's particularly promising how Microsoft seems to be subsidizing at least some amount of development for a variety of game genres just to expand the library on the console. As a result, some fantastic shmups have come out on 360 - Shikigami no Shiro 3, Do Don Pachi Dai Oujou Black Label, Raiden Fighters Aces (for $20 in the US, this game collection is probably the best deal of the generation), Death Smiles, Ketsui (in a few days). They also appear to be aiming for a JRPG market, which I could care less about, but at least seems to be benefitting JRPG players. Also, some phenomenal support for games like Crackdown, a great game no one would have played had it not been packaged with the Halo 3 Beta.

That's the kind of thing I like to see from a console maker - support of games. Sony and Microsoft have to support games, because, for them, that's how they make money. The consoles aren't profitable, often being outright sold at a loss, so they need to sell games, as well. That's good, because it means they need to appeal to me (well, hypothetically) to keep them afloat. So, as long as this is the case, it's good for them to try hard as hell to please me.

Nintendo is a little different, because they make money on their consoles. There's really no reason for them to support third party games. I think that comes across in what you see released - the Nintendo games tend to be big sellers, and there are a few third-party games that sell on branding or special partnerships, but other than that, the quality bar just tanks.

Well if they decided to compete with Nintendo for Casual games, it would end them in a literal fire as their company's are destroyed by us hardcore gamers who helped get them to where they are.
I just wished they tried harder in making things work properly. Microsoft needs to fix some of the issues with Xbox Parties (group chat)

Trying to hard?
The PS3 is still trying to make a profit, and the 360 is still pissing people of.
One thing I don't understand is, why does the PS3 have internet access but the 360 does not? anyone care to enlighten me please.

Okay, well the Wii isn't trying, well that's pretty damn obvious for the fact that imo they make pretty shitty games. I wouldn't want the other systems to take that route becuase then we'd be left with graphics I can replicate on Flash. PS3 blamed the customers for their bad release sales, which is just an astoundingly bad PR choice, their refusal to actually try and get games form 3rd party developers to be non-exclusive seems to be the equivalent of shotting oneself in the foot. The 360 need to get this red ring of death under control, M$ refuses to replace my 360 and I'm not going to shell out more money for the same thing to happen again so I'm buying a PS3 now.

They're not trying. They just throw money at the problem.
Or you could be clever and have brevity and just say this....
