Zombies, by definition, are "a dead body that has been brought back to life by a supernatural force" so are the zombies in resident evil games REALLY undead (meaning the virus thing kills them then reanimates them) or are they just a lazy slow moving version of the people from 28 days later, functioning in a human manner but without higher brain functions?

you know.... I was thinking the very same question a few minutes ago.. while watching my brother fail at gunning a few down.

I say that by definition they aren't really zombies, but its easier to call them zombies for convenience.

Well I thought a zombie was just a reanimated corpse, the method of reanimation was irrelevant. Traditionally, of course, the have been supernatural in nature, but I don't think that's strictly mandatory to be considered a zombie. *shrug*

Regardless of whether they're technically termed "zombie" or not, your poll question is whether or not they are undead. Yes, they most certainly are.

Well thats the thing, "reanimated corpse".
If they're just living people with some brain trauma caused by some drug or voodoo or whatever, then they don't really fit into it

Ok reanimated corpse that feasts on the flesh of the living and/or brains then. Point is, I don't think the method by which the zombie is reanimated is strictly relevant to whether or not it can be classified as a zombie.

If they eat people, are infected and cannot be cured (except with bullets!) then they are zombies. Viruses are becoming the main cause of zombie outbreaks because it's more believable than magic.

You know what I'd like? A return to the Romero idea of the zombies not having any real explanation for their existence, it makes them far creepier. In the original Night of the Living Dead, there's no answer given as to the cause of the zombie outbreak, though there is a slight hint that it had to do with radiation or some sort of extraterrestrial source brought back by a satellite, there wasn't a conclusive answer.

meh zombies well I suppose it really wouldn't matter how they came about to existance the fact of the matter remains that in the zombie apacolypse I'll be gunning them down not pondering how these perticular batch of zombies came about and ate all my friends

Didn't the ones in Res. 5 use guns?

Edit: And dirt bikes.
This made me chuckle :3

Yes, they did. And trucks. And boats. Some even got fat and used miniguns.

If I remember correctly (at least from the movies) the people in RE are infected, then die from the infection and then reawake as the undead. So by your definition, they're zombies. They even say that "the T-virus amplifies residual electrical activity in the brains of the dead" or some other pseudo-scientific nonsense along those lines.

However, real zombies are people who are still alive but heavily drugged and influenced/hypnotized to do their master's bidding (i.e. Voodoo). At least as far as I'm informed.

Yes, yes they are.

General rule: If it looks like a zombie, moans like a zombie and eats brains like a zombie, its a zombie, undead or infected.

Actually...

The idea that zombies are supernatural is an old superstition. Modern science has discovered that there is a virus called "Solanum" that is responsible for the death and subsequent reanimation of human beings. I suppose if there is some other kind of virus that has the same effect, the subject would still be considered a zombie. But there is no such thing as supernatural zombies.

Save me a lot of time and go read The Zombie Survival Guide. Best book ever: read it before the zombie apocalypse comes.
