I agree I'm for more abuse of Newbies. Like locking them in closets full of snakes, electro-shock therapy, waterboarding, clamps in on the genitals, etc. In fact I'm all for torture...wait what was this poll about again? Oh right newbies how I loathe them. Uncouth barbarians I say. We need an Escapist Protection League to keep these ruffians at bay and build a giant wall made of chocolate cake.
Once again the monkey with the gun is right. We need escapist home land security and a patriot act. Also Anyone with an anime avatar will be subject to "random" shake downs.
The monkey with the gun is always right how could he ever be wrong? I hope by "random" shake downs you mean purposeful groping.

I also second the Escapist Homeland Security and Patriot Act proposal. I hereby nominate myself the head of the Escapist Division of the Geheimes Staatspolizei.

The learning curve is steep in any new forum, however many you've frequented before. Believe me when I say I've seen meaner! I'm still getting my bearings, obviously, but I don't think I've ruffled any feathers just yet.

i dislike how a lot of people are discriminated against because of their post-count, not how long they have joined, some people like PurpleRain have been on here since the beggining and he doesn't have 10,000, whereas MaxTheReaper has been here almost a year and he already has 10,000. I hope someone knows what im rambling on about.
I think I agree with you on this. Although to be honest being signed up forever doesn't make you a quality poster either.

They need to lurk moar. The first thing they need to do is post for a while and get introduced to the forum, not start threads.

I have received very little n00b-abuse...

but I also lurk and actually TRY to contribute to a thread on which I am posting. People who just come in and immediately start an "OMG halo suxorz!!!1!" thread deserves advice from more experienced posters.

Some advice may be mean, but that's a personality thing. Everyone has a right to their opinion, but it is preferable that their opinion is well written and well supported.

TL;DR: Stupid n00bs need guidance, but we shouldn't be so harsh. Smart n00bs lurk.

i'm technically still a newcomer, but when i was well and truly fresh, no one was mean to me.

at least, unless i deserved it. there were a few cases where i did. but other than that, everyone's been quite kind to me. i guess that means i'm just not a twat type of n00b. yay!
Up to 972 posts already... you've been a busy bee!

I have seen countless examples here of poeple immediately being hostile towards newbies (fortunately I never experienced it myself when I first joined, I was allowed to find my feet before being flamed).

However, I do believe that maintaining a certain standard of grammar and spelling is important and it is no harm to remind them gently of this.

After all, nobody wants a forum where you can't understand half a what is being discussed due to terribly constructed sentences, an ever evolving lexicon of bizarre acronyms and that awful Leetspeak.

It's just funny whenever people say "use the searchbar" and they post a link to a 2 year old thread like "this has already been done, see?". But if you were to post in that old thread they would get yelled at for necromancing.

And I hate it when people are like "welcome to the Escapist".

I was new once; no one was "mean" to me. I don't really even notice if someone is new or not; unless I see someone say "Welcome to The Escapist".

I myself am totally new to this site, so I can't say much, but in general, yeah, it seems like people who've been doing something for a long time forget what it was like for them when they first started and expect newcomers to figure it out on their own.

Which sucks.

Is there any better kind of shake down?
Yes but they typically involve explosives and various orifices.
You know im glad youre on my side cajun, orifices and explosives dont mix well sometimes.
I tend to have this effect on people I don't know why. Then again I've been told by people if they ever took over the government I would be first up for their Secret Police Chief Position. My best friend said he would kill me if he ever took power in America that was the greatest compliment ever. He considered me a legitimate threat to his power base almost brought a tear to my eye while the rest of my Civics Class stared on in horror.

I tend to see that people who barge in here thinking they own the place tend to get flamed out the ass and either scared off or banned.

People who show up, contribute meaningful content in their posts, and generally act like worthwhile members of the community get accepted.

I'd say being mean to idiots isn't a knock against the community.
