I'm a cat person. I grew up with the sweetest little kitty. They're cute, cuddly, curious, sweet, they have genuine personalities, they're adventurous, they're fun, and they're a bit cheeky.

I've seen plenty of dogs survive on their own.

Anyways, dogs, in my opinion are smarter. Cats, to me, rely mostly on instinct, not to mention that dogs have in the past solved puzzles similar to what you give to a primate. The Soviets even sent a dog into space and the police, military and rescue services use dogs all the time.

And aside from all of that, dogs have always shown genuine love and care towards me, cats have not. Dogs are also much more interesting, have more personality, provide security and they don't walk all over your kitchen surfaces. And anyways, how often do cats save peoples lives?
I find myself disagreeing with nearly everything you write there, kind sir. First, I think cats are much smarter than dogs. I've seen cats singlehandedly solve problems, and read about many more instances of this. What makes dogs good in police and rescue services isn't intelligence. It's obedience, and those dogs have been trained to the detail of how to do what they do. They didn't come up with this behavior, they were trained. I find your example of soviets sending a dog into space silly, because the dog didn't do anything. The soviets have, in the same manner, sent inanimate objects into space. (If you have an example of a dog solving a problem on his own, a link would be very much appreciated).

I also disagree with the idea of dogs showing genuine love and care. Dogs a pack creatures, and they live in a hierarchical system. They generally see their owner as a substitute for the alpha dog, and I wouldn't consider that loyalty the equivalent of love. Forming a relationship with a cat on the other hand, takes time, trust and care, much like a human relationship.

Dogs. I've had both, and have always been able to connect better with them. Besides, I think they're cuter. Now to add some fuel to the fire, here's H.P. Lovecraft's view on the matter.

dogs all they way, theyre loyal, playful, save lives, work in all the emergency services, help the disabled etc etc etc, cats on the other hand treat you like a glorified tin opener and when theyre being "cute" it usually consists ov lying down on top of you -.-

Perhaps while your asking it of him you could give an occasion of problem solving cats? if your wanting evidence of it from dogs almost every crufts session has an exaple of it in some form of another. On another topic, why would you want a human relationship with an animal? if i want that i talk with my human friends, if i want simple awesome fun i play with my dogs :p

My sister raises guide dogs for the blind. I've been around one of the most well-trained dogs... pretty much ever. I loved that dog. Well-behaved, followed orders, all that stuff. But they are rare, and take a lot of work to raise that way. With cats, all you need to do to ensure they will be nice and love you is love and pet them while they're little: rarely will that not work.

I like a well-trained dog, but they are rare and take a lot of work. Cats don't.

Note that I'm not demanding proof, I'm requesting something to satisfy my curiosity. Here's a nice example of a smart cat solving a practical problem:

I looked for Crufts, I only saw a dog show with parading dogs doing tricks. Searching for a combination of "crufts" and "smart", "clever", "intelligence" or "intelligent" yielded no results.

Also, I don't want a human relationship with an animal. I was using that comparison to illustrate what I think is the difference between an animal loving you and the blind loyalty dogs seem to immediately give their owners.
