What you're essentially saying is that everyone should be comfortable in their own skin, and it's ridiculous for someone to try to be someone they are not. I agree, and I think most people would agree, but it's absolutely not reality. I've known more than a few gamers who were uncomfortable with revealing the
depth of their nerdiness to anyone -- including people who play games, but not as much as them. These people exist, and it makes this a relevant question. That said,
it's ridiculous for someone to try to be someone they are not. The anecdote in the OP is, honestly, depressing.
