While I did like the movie and again liked the first one personally they have come out at the wrong time for me because both have been overshadowed by the bbc series Sherlock.

While Downey and Law have played the parts well something about Cumberbatch and Freeman they both just seem to play the characters amazingly, add to that the last episode of this second season is based on the final solution means I will be able to guage it against the movie more directly.

As other have said: He survived the fall in the books, so the OP is incorrect. Arthur Conan Doyle got tired of everyone demanding more Sherlock Holmes books so he killed off the character. People were so annoyed at him though that he was basically forced to bring the character back.

As for the execution of it, I think it was fine to bring him back at the end as it stays true to the series, and makes for a better movie ending. I'm sure they did test runs with an ending of him just being dead. What I was more surprised at was Irene Adler's death. I haven't read the whole series so maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember her dying at all.

It does not really matter that much in the long run as there are lots of different versions of Sherlock Holmes in both TV and Movies. And so long as this one does not fall into the bumbling Watson trend, I will continue to enjoy it.
Pretty much this. Iirc, one of the big reasons Conan Doyle brought back Holmes after the fall was because QUEEN VICTORIA HERSELF wrote to him demanding him to do so.

Might just be an urban legend but that would be kind of hard to refuse if true, no?

besides about the poll.

please no more!
This video AGAIN? It's official, the anti-arrow-knee brigade is now officially more annoying than the arrow-knee jokes.

OT: I'm a purist, so you have one guess what I think about changed endings.

Well I wasn't really bothered by the ending of Sherlock Holmes 2. It could have gone the other way and wouldn't have made much difference to me. But the bit of comedy with him sitting in the chair whilst Watson runs after his wife was alright. I was more annoyed by how... plain Professor Moriarty was. I was expecting a lot more from his character after seeing how sinister and shadowy he was in the first movie but the movie was still good all the same.

Now what's dangerous at both ends and crafty in the middle? :p

Seriously, 17 people went for the arrow to the knee "joke" option?...

OT:
I kinda liked their version of Sherlock surviving, even though my initial thought was "drowning wouldn't be as much of an issue as the impact into the water and hitting the water would be a best case scenario." It was a good movie overall, far better then the first in my opinion, not to say the first was bad by any means.
