Am I ashamed to be human? No, because that's such a broad thing that I can't imagine being upset by it.

When it gets down to the more specific things though I sometimes feel ashamed. Whenever I see some Star Wars fan yelling about Han shooting first and actually wishing George Lucas would die I do feel a little ashamed to know that as a nerd (not even a big star wars fan) society lumps that guy and myself in the same category.

But no, I have no shame in being part of humanity as a whole.

Why use what others have done as a lazy way of assessing your place in the world? Unless you think you are a greedy, retarded, idiotic, asshole of a douchebag you have no excuse. You can't be responsible for what other people do, and you can't change what you are. So you can either settle for all that, or say fuck all of them and do your best.

Firstly, we've no yardstick for measuring humanity other than humanity. If there were lots of intelligent species on the planet, and all of them were better than us, maybe then.

Secondly, I don't see much reason to be ashamed for what other people have done.

What an odd way of viewing the world. I'm not ashamed to be human, i'm disturbed by what humans can do, and have done, for both bad reasons and no reason whatsoever, but my overwhelming feeling about being human, is just how lucky I am to exist at all, considering the odds.
Being ashamed of being human because of what others have done is as nonsensical as a dog being ashamed of being a dog because of all those dogs that maul and kill people.
