Between people saying that the gaming industry coughs out nothing but mindless generic games with slapped on gimmicks for the sake of gathering more customers, whom they care nothing about, and saying that we live in Orwellian times, I think that this website might be kinda cynical. Which brings me to ask you a question. Are you cynical, yes or no, and why?

Personally I'm kinda on the fence, I used to be a major cynic, thinking that everyone on the planet with a few exceptions was either stupid, selfish or violent. Then I realized one day that considering that I have a roof over my head, two loving parents, a steady supply of food, a proper education, a stable circle of friends and an overall comfortable life, I don't have much right to complain. Nowadays I try to balance out cynicism with idealism, and frankly I think that the world could use a little more of the latter.

What about you?

I'm more optimistic. That's most because the vast majority of people around here seem to have prescribed to this postmodern cynicism of everything and I'm the kind of guy who can't stand a one-sided fight so I'll take the side no body wants. Personally, My life might not be rainbows and unicorns but I'm not going to act like a sad sack of crap because of it.

Of course, I'm a cynic. It's one of the endearing things people actually enjoy about me here. I have something to say and the words to say it with. I snark and carry on in an amusing fashion that is without cause to hail mods, yet harsh enough to keep you focused...unless it's a deliberate refuge in audacity. I have my funnier moments, naturally, but the point is that I am not simply cynical. Not JUST cynical.

I am the cynic who looks at what he sees and has an opinion grounded in something largely resembling fact, interesting discussion, and a twist of comedy. I am also the cynic who likes to be pleasantly surprised. Many of the bad things I might see coming a mile away? I want to be wrong about them. Besides, there is also the anti-cynic cynical approach I have. Cynical behavior can work both ways. I can just as easily not believe the words of ANOTHER cynic, and thus turn the board around weirdly. It helps that I took a number of philosophy courses!

BTW: The captchas still aren't working right. That's my cynical moment for the post. These things still don't work right and I ASKED THEM to look into it with the proper channels. Do I get AND consideration here? I AM NOT A BOT, DAMMIT!!

To be honest that's kind of how I think about it too, the world doesn't need another person added to the countless cynics, someone needs to look at it from a different angle...still my sense of humor couldn't be more dry.

I used to be a buttload more cynical before I discovered Buddhism. Granted, I'm still quite cynical now, but I usually direct my cynicism at society or attitudes rather than the people carrying said attitudes. I feel it's important to be quite cynical so you can see life more clearly, without any rose-tinted goggles, but not to the extent that your vision is clouded by it. :)

I'm a pretty big optimist. I believe things usually work themselves out, and for the better.

Whatever happens, happens.

But I'm also British, and being British means that I have a predisposition to thinking any attempt by our country to make something great will inevitably fall flat on it's arse. Also, the sarcasm. Damn I love sarcasm.

That's pretty much me. Except for the philosophy courses.

Yeah, no, I'm totally not cynical about how everyone's apathy is turning everything into gray pools of dog drool. Certainly not cynical about how when gamers complain about something done wrong with the latest brown macho bro-athon when they should be focusing on why we have just another brown macho bro-athon. I certainly didn't make a thread asking is the USA should be ostracized from the rest of the world's internet.

And I'm certainly not going to cynically point out that proper channels will never ever get things done... nor that if you want something to change, you're going to have to make a thread (like I tried to do and failed) that gets everyone off their apathetic asses and it'll have be filled with a billion posts demanding the captcha thing is changed.

...I'm also never sarcastic... ever.

Im always cynical, I hate being optimistic because I generally (80% of the time) get let down by people. I hate building up and looking forward only to be kicked in the stomach all the time.

Yes I am. I grew up in an abusive home environment, hardly had any friends growing up, and I'm surrounded by right wing nutjobs and people who think it's alright to kill things. It's only natural that I would be cynical.

I'm a cynic because if I expect everything to be s*** then I can never be disapointed, only pleasantly surprised.

And because people are, by large, either terrible or stupid.

I am not very cynical about most things, however I am cynical about certain things. One of these is the gaming industry getting its head out of its ass anytime in the near future.

I try to balance cynicism and optimism, personally. I'm quite prone to totally and completely falling in love with things (gaming or otherwise) more than I really should. But I don't let it take over entirely. I still look at negatives, and I'm especially sure when it comes to gaming to look at the minority side of something, because that's usually where I get my best information.

Hugely cynical.

It's just who I am.
Some comedian (I think it was Russell Kane) said British people are happiest when complaining about things, it sets a nice bit of adrenaline up our spine. Thats pretty much me.
I try to keep it toned down in public though, but I'm thinking it pretty loudly.
