...Wow i went on a rant...so...Are you getting skyrim?
One single paragraph hardly qualifies as a rant on these forums. Anywho, I'll get Skyrim, but not immediately--I want to wait until there is absolute verification of modding capability before I consider buying it. Personally, I enjoyed Oblivion, but only after I got mods for it. The combat was somewhat functional, if quite bland...okay, I didn't really like the combat, but the feeling of a large open world was definitely there...a large open world consisting of copy-pasted forests tha--okay, okay, I'm heading on the same road you did now with your opening post.
Anywho, Skyrim will be 'safe'. It's not going to carry the combined impact of Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age and Fable all combined into one god-like fantasy game, but it will be quite functional. It will have design principles that mainly appeal to console gamers, but which will be adjusted for PC gamers in an at least functional fashion. For the unique adventure experience that PC gamers crave, it'll likely take modifications.
So I'm going to wait. Not necessarily for a price drop--if I see the rise of the modding community, I'll give it a go. I'd love to join the modding community from the start and help build the game, but I've been so disappointed with recent game releases that I'm not willing to pay full price for a game I only hope will actually be enjoyable. I'd rather verify the entertainment factor before committing $50--or as lately has been the case, $60 dollars for a video game.
