I am an advocate of the seperation of state and economy. If that was added to the original american consitution. I'd say that would be pretty much the ideal government system.

As for the perversion of the left-right axis; I would point more towards a lack of political principles in the populace. Hell, I've known people who vote based on which candidate is better looking etc...

A left-right axis does work, but one must consider it's limitations, especailly if the pollster sticks Nationalism and Fascism on the right wing... you know someone was making a lot of noise while the cake was in the oven.

I'm a left-leaning libertarian.

... It is not a contradiction in terms! ... Why are you all staring at me? ... *runs away*

It is fascism, the person who made the term up said it was so. Fascism, in itself, isn't a problem really... well it is for me but I don't like companies and governments being buddy buddy personally but the term, alone and without bias, isn't a problem. I just believe government should always be suspicious of the actions of those in charge of the corporate body, understanding banks have more power then standing armies and acting accordantly to make sure they don't become slave states.

We can go back to mercantile governments and see non-authoritarian fascists who controlled all economic matters with the blessing of the state but left personal matters alone. Ancient Greece where there where some really nice communistic democracies in place. Neither communism or fascisms automatically means authoritarian, it is just we tend to imagine the more modern incarnations of these two terms whom have been led by some of the most evil authoritarians around.

It has just been my observations that governments who listen mostly to the economical heads, even putting them into positions to control regulations and the likes, create a huge mess that we the tax payer end up paying. Even libertarians, whom are incorrectly labelled as right leaning cause their opposition to social programs, understand this is nothing more then robbing from the poor to give to the rich.

I personally, as I can't vote in the US, rooted for Ron Paul myself. Sure there are much better choices from the true socialists but with how bias the system is over there these choices never got a chance. They couldn't even get onto the air at all, as they where locked out of debates and anything which might get them name recognition. At least Ron got that far and of all the candidates who did he was the best one standing.

Can not really agree with libertarians on all matters but at least they would get the corporate body out of government and the government out of our private lives. Who else standing up there promised us that?

Jinx_Dragon: Social libertarian, hows that for head espolody?

I'm a Liberal (by UK standards which is more liberal than US standards) but I defiantly have socialist tendencies.

Now all you have to do is to rename the thread and poll names for instant hilarity.

A person's political leaning is better expressed as a function of x and y, not just of x.

See here for an explanation.

When I take the quiz on that site I end up being slightly left and below center.
Ah, you beat me to it. I completely agree, the compass is so much better than the spectrum. Extreme right doesn't necessarily mean fascism, and many authoritarians/fascists have different economical leanings. Pinochet was right-wing, Hitler was centre-right, Stalin was of course left.

That's a great quiz; I end up a little less to the left than Dalai Lama, and a bit lower than him. I knew that, but nice to see I didn't go around considering myself something I didn't appear to be.

I refuse to label myself. Other people can try but it will never work. I believe that we should have universal health care for every American. The American corporate privatized health care system is an utter failure. I also believe that the death penalty is ok, but I think that rapists and child molesters should be added to the list for it. The former belief is supposedly "left wing" while the latter is decidedly "right wing". I think that environmentalism is a good think, but also think the people who believe we can destroy the Earth are morons.
