Black cats crossing your path, broken mirrors, opening umbrellas indoors . . . Is there something in these things that are bad? Are you superstitious? If so let us know which ones and why.

EDIT: Fixed the spelling of superstitious in the title :p

Why are you asking? Nah, a bit I guess. But not much. I think ther is more that we can see, but that big mumbo jumbo we see on tv sometimes like that .. what's his name again? That takes the money to fool people to say he know's about their departed family? Don't think so.

Not in the least. I don't pay attention to superstitions at all.

No, but I am paranoid about it, I don't believe in any of it, but what if... is that hypocritical?

No, not at all. I don't believe in any form of 'greater' or 'unseen' powers or influences that affect our lives. But then i'm a man of science and thus i only go by what we can see, smell, taste, touch and hear and the rules of physics and whatnot. Until science proves a superstition, i will write it off as a load of shite.

This also connects to my firm atheist beliefs; i view religion as one big collective superstition.

Only during exam time or closing in on assignment deadlines. Of course, by that time I'm usually found sleep-deprived and over-caffeinated, babbling about squirrels at 4am...

Opening an umbrella indoors can't be helped sometimes. If it does, no big deal.
Black cat crossing your path is bad, but if you stop to pet it, and it starts purring, it negates the bad luck.
Smashing a mirror, hell if I know. It could be a problem if you cut yourself on the glass, but I don't know if it is bad luck or not.
Walking under a ladder, listen to me... DON'T EVER FUCKING DO THIS. I, myself have been riddled with bad luck for walking under a ladder once. I swear.

So yes, I am partially superstitious to the ones that have affected me. Mirror and umbrella? Nah. Cat and Ladder? Hell yes.

Out of habit. I nod to magpies and cross over broken tiles, just because that was the way I was brought up. Everyone in my family is a tad superstitious, and you just get into the habit of opening umbrellas as you walk out the door and trying not to trip over the black cat.

When I am in my town of birth I sleep I my house and I am alone. I know that 3 people died in this house. When I am trying to sleep and i hear the crack of old wood or wind in the bushes i get a little scared. In all honesty I lock the door to my bed room and sleep with a crowbar under my bed. well, the sleep of reason ...

Besides this there is nothing paranormal I believe in.

I don't consider my self superstitious, no. That said, I still try to avoid breaking mirrors and all that. You know, just in case.

I'm superstitious about Basketball. If I had a good game with a certain pair of shorts, or undershirt, or armband, I'll wear it the next game. If my team does well while I'm doing something during the game, I'll do it again.

I'm very superstitious, I see the writing's on the wall. Yes I am very superstitious, cuz the ladders bout' to fall.

:p

Being serious no I am not that superstitious although they say that going past people on stairs is bad luck (I think) but I've done that plenty of times, so far so good. Although now that I think about it my life can get really bad sometimes :S

:D
EDIT: After this thread I am now gonna list to that song that I quoted and random beatles songs :p

I like to think I am not superstitious, but I know for a fact that I am... I think I inherited it from me ol' Mam and Pap.

Possibly one of those things that will always stick with me... like old people and racism.

I believe in superstition to the extent that it is psychosomatic. If you believe something is lucky (or unlucky) enough your brain will help (or hinder) you to achieve things. This is the same reason why most sports teams have a better home game record than away record (the cheering of the fans encourages them and the booing helps demoralize the opponents). So if someone believes something is lucky, then for them it really is. Of course, this falls apart when the person who believes isn't directly involved (i.e. fans who grow a "playoff beard" or wear certain clothes on game-day because they are lucky)

No, I haven't seen enough convincing evidence to convince me of superstitions.
