No, they're just a product, which people can stop paying for (not going to games, not paying for pay per wiev matches etc.) if they think they're too expensive.

They make lots of money for their teams/sponsors, so even though they cost a lot for the team/sponsor, they're still generating profit for the team/sponsor.

Yes, bunch of self-obsessed pricks. Ridiculously overpaid. I mean, they get paid in millions, for WHAT?! I mean bloody hell, they're just glorified entertainers really.

Yes, of course, I'd go as far as to argue that anyone who gets paid 50-100k a week is overpaid.

The fault isn't necessarily with the players though. Let's face it, if someone offered you that much money to do something you loved then you'd take it too. It doesn't stop some of them being dicks, but those same players would probably still be dicks on an average 20k a year wage.

You are all wrong

They are entertainers, that is true. But Tom Hanks isn't forced to fly all over the country, practice, and work out at ridiculous levels. An NBA player plays at least 82 games in a season. A game is every 2-3 days. Practice is from the ungodly hours of the day to night. They have to fly around the country all the time and have to be home at 10 when they have out days. They see their families very soldemly until the like 2 months of off season. They get paid a lot sure, but it comes with a pretty crappy life.

i think they get paid far too much for what they do. for example i read an article today saying that a footballer called david bentley crashed his £98,000 porsche, and got fined £500 which is a measly 1% of his weekly £50,000 income. but thats just my view

He got fined the set amount for crashing, as a result of reckless driving. Not because he crashed a porch. They can't change the rule, they punished him fairly.

I hate how much money goes to sports players these days. I can understand a couple hundred thousand dollars per year to cover injuries and whatnot, but nothing can justify the millions of dollars paid to some of those athletes who are playing a game as their job. I mean, c'mon!

you make a fair point, pimppeter2, but what about joey barton? he stubbed out a cigar IN A 15 YEAR OLDS EYE and got away with a small fine of around £2,000 pound and a week of community service, i think, it was a while ago. what if one of us did that?

Wasn't he out of professional sports then?

You can't blame professional sports for that. You can however blame ordinary people. Seeing as how they are the judges and the juries.

Overhyped? Most of them. Overpayed? Most of them. Then again, that goes for all sports.
First of all, if you play pro sports, you don't deserve millions of dollars. You're playing a game. It's supposed to be fun. Enjoy it, and relish in the fact that you get payed a good amount of money for playing a game. In my opinion, the only people that deserve to get payed that much money are the people that do things to help the world, or live as a civilization.
Pretty much this. AND they get away with fucking everything!!!

I tell you, next time I glass an innocent, I'll do some keepy uppy's and see if that gets me out of trouble, or at least a very very very reduced sentence....

(anyone get the reference?)

In fairness David Bentley was also fined 2 weeks wages by Harry Redknapp (Spurs manager)

Gerrard. Although Barton was hardly any better with his cigarette incident

For the most part, yes. Even when the majority of the team goes to jail, yes to all questions.
