Some of us might know what artificial languages are, some of us don't (if you don't, see the spoiler box below), but they are pretty much one of the nerdiest (in a good way) thing on this earth. So, have you ever made/want to make one?
Artificial languages are complete languages (which excludes pig latin, ect.) which have been created instead of evolving over time from other older languages, like modern languages. Notable examples are Klingon, Elvish, Fremen, and Esperanto (which is a somewhat artificial language, because it borrows linguistic traits from many European languages).

Not to brag, but I'm in the process of making one now: It's a reworking of German (but with greatly simplified grammar, and no formalities), with some traits of Slavic languages (mostly pronunciation), and a hexadecimal counting system. It's called Technus.

I want to, but...

I already have enough complete wastes of time among my hobbies. Faux-linguistics would be too over the top even for me.

Nope, not nearly worth the amount of effort required. I can't even make myself start a novel I've been working out in my head for the past 10 years, let alone make a language.

Are you trying to convince us, or yourself?

I've never really taken an interest, I knew one girl in high school who could read and write Elvish from LOTR. Didn't seem at all practical and a bit of a waste of time seeing as she didn't know anyone else who was interested.

I wouldn't call it a waste of time, it's actually practical if you want to write stuff in public that you don't want anyone else to see. And if you ever get abducted and held hostage by aliens/zombies/etc you could always send a code phrase that no one but your language co-creator will know. Or, you know, you could always learn Swahili.

I think I briefly tried making one when I was much younger.

Now with my knowledge of Greek and Latin syntax it's a tempting prospect...

No. I'm not trying to convince anyone, I'm just saying that I'm just saying that I'm in the process of making a language, not bragging.

I wrote an Arkanian dictionary with a few hundred words once.

Does that count as 'making' a language?

If anyone is thinking of doing an artificial language, I'd recommend reading the languages chapter in Stanley Schmidt's Aliens and Alien Societies[footnote]Also very handy if you're writing science fiction and want to create yourself some aliens.[/footnote] and The Language Construction Kit [http://www.zompist.com/kit.html]. They really, really get you thinking about the underlying morphology, phonology, and syntax of your created language.
