Some of my friends and I were having this discussion and we were split down the middle.

When I played rugby back in high school, I remember this old man that used to do laps around the field. The guy must have been in his late seventies and yet he was perfectly capable of running and sprinting around the field for the duration of our 1-2 hour practices. However, in the few conversations I had with him, I ascertained that he was a bit unhinged. Not in that hilariously crazy old man way but in that sad, not-all-there, lonely old man way.

Conversely, my Dad's uncle was kind of a frail man. It would take him several minutes to get up 5 stairs to his bedroom with the help of his cane (he always refused our help). However, he was one of the smartest, sharpest and wittiest men I ever met. He could easily engage you in thought provoking conversation and I can't think of anyone who didn't respect and somewhat revere his intelligence.

I, myself, would rather keep my mental faculties. I figure that as an old man, I won't be in a rush to go anywhere so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I moved slower than a turtle.

So what about you, Escapists? Which would you rather be?

I'd rather have my wits about me. It would suck to be withering away, but I'd rather be fully aware of everything.
Plus, ya gotta figure that in the future there'll be solutions to help aid in that, it's significantly harder to repair brain problems.

Hmmm, let me see...I can either suffer from extreme pain and be smart enough to realize every detail or be in tip-top shape and blissfully unaware of my coming doom. I`ll have to pick the latter question.

What's the point in having a functioning body if you can't appreciate it?

Edit: Plus, there's more likely to be some medical method of overcoming any physical problem than having any way to fix your mind.

Exactly. Medical advancements are occurring at a constantly faster rate so, in fifty years, when I'm seventy, hopefully I'll be as physically fit as my parents (who are fifty) are now
I read a statistic a while ago which stated that the average age of death for our generation will be roughly one hundred. If true, that kicks ass

I intend to die an old man. I'll probably lose some of my physical faculties, and that's alright, but I want my mind intact. That's where I keep my thoughts!
