My nephew has it and my little brother may have it, the hospital is ridiculously slow. Someone in my class has it, too.

Someone earlier in this thread claimed to have said that the mediums of literature and cinema relate to Autism more often than the Asperger's.

It turns out, that a very popular movie, at the time of it's release, "Napoleon Dynamite" tells the story of three main characters that show, according to what i've read, the characteristics of people diagnosed with Severe and Mild Asperger's Syndrome. (Depending on the character, forgot which ones.)

Never would've known that.

The Curious Incident of the dog at night-time is a very good book following the story of a young adult with Aspergers syndrome, it got alot of book of the year awards as well I think. Definately worth checking out.
Heh I actually have that one on my bookshelf totaly forgot about it, second this well worth a read by *goes to check* Mark Haddon.

Asperger's Syndrome? It's the new A.D.D.

Not to say Asperger's is a joke. To have it is potentially debilitating. But being anti-social, shy, or agoraphobic is not to have Asperger's. There are serious neurological issues at work with Asperger's.
This.

Professionally diagnosed at 2. Not sure if any of the help they tried to give me did much, I seem perfectly normal. Miles ahead of the kids that still played TCGs in high school. >.>

Though, I mostly just tried to be like my older brother, so I'd say that contributed the most to me being normal. I don't need any huge amount of structure (though, I am lazy when not in school, and sometimes easily distracted...) and have plenty of friends/have had relationships.
And I think it's making college a **** ton easier! :D

13.7 percent of people who've voted have AS? This can either prove that people with AS are largely nerds, or that the people of these boards are total pricks. Either way, I have a mild form Aspergers myself. There are, like, 8 points of identification that defines AS and I have 6 of them.

Or that having AS and knowing you have it makes you more likely to click a thread link with "Asperger's Syndrome" in it. :<

It's because wikipedia always states what the DSM-IV is for a 'mental condition'. But it's a terribly flawed system, and so many people are analyzing themselves now, thinking wikipedia is a valid source for doing such thing. Heck, I meet the 'requirements' for Asperger's, but I'm damn sure I don't have it.

I'm unsure if people are being hypochondriacs and thinking they have it or if the polls accurate because people with Aspergers would likely be drawn to a form of social interaction like the internet anyway, so you can't be sure if its overrepresented.

Could be just people who go "hey I'm antisocial and a bit of a nerd, but its not my fault its because of this condition", its like this guy I knew who talked to himself and thought he had schizophrenia, though once I told him what its actually like to have voices that actively argue back, I changed his mind.

In order to experience what autism is like according to one of my teachers, I opened up 3 different zero punctuation videos and then tried to pay attention to only one. Now after reading a Wikipedia article about Asperger's syndrome, I opened up a bunch of youtube videos and then read "1982" while they were all playing at the same time to experience how I interpreted Asperger's syndrome must be like as described by the assholes at

Just because you display the symptoms of Aspergers that doesn't mean you have it. Many people just use medical disorders as a way to explain their obnoxious behavior, claiming that they can't help it.

I have many of the traits of Aspergers but I know I don't have it. My poor social behavior is due to my own flaws. I don't blame it on some medical disorder.

There are more books dealing with people with Autism than Asperger's Syndrome. People know who Rain Man was because there was a movie about a guy with autism, but I haven't seen anything directly about people with Asperger's Syndrome. Only last year in Australia were people with Asperger's given eligibility for government support to pay for medication, but once you turn 18 they take some of that support away from you even though you still have a need for that medication to manage your related anxiety issues.

There are a few books about what Asperger's Syndrome is, but not fictional examples with characters who have the condition. Wish there were more characters people like me could look up to, I'm stuck with Noe from True Tears and Osaka from Azumanga Daioh, and I don't even know if it's canon whether they have Asperger's. There is the manga "With The Light" but that's about autism, not Asperger's.

There are autobiographies of people with Asperger's I haven't read yet, but I would personally like to see more fictional characters with Asperger's for people like me to look up to. Maybe because if nobody sees them in the popular culture people won't know/will continue to deny it exists as a real condition. I don't know how many times I've had to tell people it isn't a disease, but a condition.
The Curious Incident of the dog at night-time is a very good book following the story of a young adult with Aspergers syndrome, it got alot of book of the year awards as well I think. Definately worth checking out.
Just saw the movie Mary and Max, let's just say the bit about meeting your doppleganger and feeling an uncanny disturbance was what the German Philosophers had right, among other things. That has Phillip Seymour Hoffmann playing an Asperger's middle aged man.

I have a nephew with aspergers, and I can say that it has nothing to do with the parenting. We all could tell something wasn,t right almost from the day he was born.

I have a very slight case of it myself and thankfully over the years have learned how to overcome it and now lead a, for the most part, normal life. I have a girlfriend who loves me deeply, many good friends, and a decent social life. It just took some time and practice and a lot of determination to get to here. Also some medication.
