So many reviewers harp on Assassin's Creed's combat that I thought I'd get a community response concerning it. I actually enjoy it- I take fencing, and while it's obviously not realistic, it captures that tension and though process of swordplay greatly. It encapsulates the feeling one gets when staring down an opponent perfectly. Also, the counters are awesome.

NOTE: For some reason, the poll isn't showing up. Odd.

Counters are cool, but generally it's awfully repetitive and easy nowadays. If enemies attacked more often and do more damage, it would improve things immensly, give you minimal time to think about and act on instinct would make the combat far more enjoyable.

I think it should a little bit like Arkham Asylum where you have guys that pose more of a threat and the enemies harder to counter. Then again, I don't play Assassin's Creed for the combat, I play it for the story, the parkour, and the thrill of running on roof tops or lurking in the crowds just to assassinate my target without people knowing what just happened.

I don't play that many sword games but to me AC2 has the best sword combat I've seen. I often like to hire mercenaries and set them upon a group of guards and just sit back and watch the carnage.

It would be more fun if they actually attacked together like any real group of guards/knights/soldiers would, then it might be challenging, instead of having them attack one at a time like some old cheesy kung-fu movie.

you know, i was fine with it. UP UNTIL THE FINAL BOSS. when you had to kill every assassination target in the game AT ONCE. then i realized how effin effed it was. i sorely missed my arkham asylum fighting at that part.

i dont mind it. if your waiting for them to attack so you can counter then you are playing it wrong. go on the offensive

only counters i apreciate are Ninja Gaiden ones. Those werent about killing your opponent in a 1 hit KO, they were about giving you some breathing room so you could attack someone. If your counter is 'all powerful' i aint going to attack, im just going to counter.

In AC:Brotherhood they attack you while you are countering someone else, so they improved it a little.

My views on this boil down to:

- Most games are repetitive, reviewers just needed something to harp on about, also they probably ignored the tutorials and missed out on the next bit

- AC1's combat was great, you could choose how hard you wanted the challenge. You could counter with a sword almost never getting hit, or you could attempt to counter with the hidden blade in the knowledge that failure would mean you wouldn't block. On top of that you could go full on assault and tap the attack button just as the blades met and then you would get an instant kill with good timing. Doing this left you vulnerable to attacks from behind but you could counter these if you actively watched all your opponents. I myself am very skilled at this, wiping out large groups of enemies in about 30 seconds with a mixture of skill and timing and watching the enemy movements closely.

- AC2 removed the 'hit-button-as-swords-meet' aspect which was a little annoying because it was what gave depth to it. Instead the enemies had health or stamina and yeah, it got a little repetitive, but luckily I could still fallback on hidden blade counters. Unfortunately you could now block with them, so the difficulty went back to being easy across the board.

- ACB's combat is pretty good, and there is a lot more opportunites for creatively eliminating your opponents. I still think the timed hits should have been brought back though.

They were just your average Assassin guards who hang around Masyaf all the time, augmented with the Apple to look like your targets (but when you kill them they go back to their normal form). They're the basic enemy that can be easily countered and engaged, if you had trouble with a group of nine of these guys then I seriously don't know how you made it that far in the game...

I think brotherhood has really upped the game on the combat, it is much more challenging, but still not too hard, yet if it wasn't for the medicine, I would have had my ass handed to me plenty of times. And by god I am in love with the crossbow.

Personally I think the "combat" in Brotherhoods Multiplayer is one of the most innovative yet. Mostly because it really invokes the cat & mouse-feeling and to turn the tables you have to actually plan and be aware of what goes on around you.
