For my online multimedia class our final project is to poll 20 people on a news issue of our choice. below is my questionnaire on the bill that woudl require games rated T and above to include warning labels.

1. Are you aware of the bill submitted by Congressman Joe Baca which would require warning labels for games?

2. How does this impact you?

3. If this bill was passed what would you do?

I've chosen the current bill issued, by Congressman Joe Baca, that forces games with violent content to have an additional warning label clear on the front that states "WARNING: Excessive exposure to violent video games and other violent media has been linked to aggressive behavior." link here for more info: http://gamepolitics.com/2011/01/25/congressman-joe-baca-pushes-warning-labels-games

I'd be glad to help with this

1) Vaguely aware, and that link you gave helps a bit as well.

2) This does not impact me too much, as I'll soo turn 18 and can purchase games of any rating.

3) I'd be disapointed but not suprised that this has taken up time and money of congress. It is a stupid bill with, what I think, is a sketchy basis.

I hope this helps you, good luck with the rest!

1. Yes
2. It will have the same effect as warning labels on cigars - none.
3. Nothing I can do, I'm not someone who has say in the US jurisdiction system.

1) I wasn't.
2) Not at all. You could say that it gives unfair treatment to games as opposed to, say, film, but this wouldn't be the thing to deprive gaming of its first amendment rights.
3) I'd be rather happy, to be honest. More fuel against those who said they can't understand those fancy-pants ESRB labels.

1. Was not aware at all

2. I am old enough to buy the games, and know the product I'm buying before hand so the label is pointless in my opinion. Also people that are buying games for their kids don't seem to read labels and pay attention now so I see it doing very little.

3. Not really a lot I can do since I believe the system is screwed and most politicians ignore the people who they are suppose to represent if they have differing opinions from themselves or their parties opinion.

3. I would be pissed, but that's about it.

1. Are you aware of the bill submitted by Congressman Joe Baca which would require warning labels for games?
I was unaware.

2. How does this impact you?
Not in the slightest really, I'm in the UK and we apparently get different game names and packaging anyway, let alone warning printed on the front. I think it would probably have little effect on the people who should actually be getting these games - if a parent is put off by the warning, the game probably wasn't age appropriate anyway, and if it was the kid can go and buy it his/herself.

(Besides, the whole link to violence is ridiculous. I grew up with me and my brothers 'helping' dad play the original Wolfenstien game from when we were old enough to know what "press that", "shoot!" and "bad guy over there!" meant. I may not be particularly normal by some society's terms, but I'm one of the most mild-mannered people you're likely to meet. They tried the same thing with TV when it first came out.)

3. If this bill was passed what would you do?
Probably nothing, I'm old enough to buy any game I want regardless of rating and I'm more likly to pay attention to reviews and summaries of gameplay rather than warnings. Besides - I don't think I even notice excessive violence compared to normal violence. Is the new assasination animation in Reach more or less violent than a blood-spattering snipe from across the map in another game that doesn't give you a close up of someone being repeatedly stabbed? (or even show the bullet for that matter)

1. I know about it but thought we we're done with it already...

2. It doesn't affect me directly.

3. Complain that the label is blocking the art on the cover or that I would now have to pay for foreign games.

Sure, why not?

{1} I seem to recall hearing about it.

{2} I'm 29. The label wouldn't have any personal effect on my ability to purchase games. I do, however, object to the lie. The study of video game violence has always been inconclusive, ergo this would be inaccurate. Trying to make me or any person feel dirty over a game is asinine.

{3} I would...not really worry about it too much. It's an issue of discussion, contention, and fuel for sarcastic remark, but there isn't much at stake for me here except for maybe an ideal, the notion that games promote FUN, not violence.

1. No i have just heard this

2.I turned 17 last year so i no longer have to worry about M rated games

3. Be peeved, while it wont effect me its still a low blow to games making them seem more like toys than a medium, next you will see choking hazard labels on the discs.

1: No

2: Uhhm, not at all really, government fat-cats always find a way to waste money that could have been better spent.

3: Wish her, and everyone as simple-minded as her, would get extra impressionable, watch Jackass, and kill themselves in one of the various deadly stunts so we didn't have to put up with their infantile squabbling. (You could probably file this under eagerly-hostile & offended at such blatant ignorance!)

1-Yes, I am well aware
2-It would affect my ability to purchase games, (16 years old)
3-I would be adding a name to the Death Note... And be seriously pissed...

Hope it helps!

I have heard of the bill, and I think it's absolutely absurd as there is no clear scientific evidence that links exposure to video games to violent behavior. In recent studies we've actually seen that violent crimes have become less common, not the other way around, since video games have become more popular.

To put it in a more organized fashion,

1) Yes, I have.

2)It doesn't directly impact as I'll continue to purchase game regardless of what they say on the front. Though it may give the uninformed a worse opinion of gamers, and by extension me.

3)If the bill were passed, well... it wouldn't affect me much as I live in Canada. But if I were a U.S Citizen I would certainly be writing in and demanding a reconsideration of the bill.

1. No, but thanks for the update

2. Doesn't really affect me per say, since I'm of age. Though most parents don't really read warning labels for video games. Just play COD at 4pm. You'll see what I'm talking about.

3. Laugh everytime I read the back cover of a video game. It's just...ridiculous.

In reply to your topic question:

1. Are you aware of the bill submitted by Congressman Joe Baca which would require warning labels for games?

Vaguely aware of it, but that's not surprising. I don't pay a lot of attention to what's going through the govt. at any given time.

2. How does this impact you?

It doesn't impact me directly because I don't have young kids and am not in any danger of needing a warning label myself. IMO, people would just ignore a big warning label or think it makes the game look more enticing. Woo...hoo...

3. If this bill was passed what would you do?

Ignore the label the same way I ignore the dire death warnings on the pack of cigs I'm smoking right now.

hope this helps
