I wouldn't say I discriminate, but I do cringe when I see a MLP, faceless or anime avatar. I think it's because they're so.. Identity less, and make it hard to spot someone immediately.

If you don't have a cat avatar then I will report you for spam and call you a terrorist.

My avatar speaks for itself when it comes to discrimination and conspiracy theories.
It's funny because I find your avatar is an appropriate response to a LOT of things around here.
If I might ask, what's it from?
It's from a BBC comedy series called Blackadder. Specifically, it's from Series 4, Blackadder Goes Forth.

No, I don't think so. The only avatars that irritate me are the pony ones, and that's just because they all look the same to me. I can't tell the difference between the people. Otherwise I haven't seen anything offensive, and I don't judge people for their avatars.

I often find it difficult to distinguish between all the people who just use the generic avatar, but I don't discriminate, no.

Do you think there's some level of discrimination on forums towards those without custom avatars? (Assuming the forum allows avatars) Do you think people with avatars sometimes look down on someone with a generic one? Like that person is a "noob" or just someone passing through that doesn't deserve your time?

(This is only a half serious topic so don't take it too seriously.)
Maybe, it's like a slight sort of 'disappointment' that I get when I see somebody with a default avatar, but it's for like a literal milisecond. I don't worry about it.

BUT with that said, everybody should make their own Avatar, like me. I'M AM PART OF THE TRUE ALPHA SPECIMENS, ALL OTHERS ARE INFERIOR! RAWR, RAWR, RAWR!

Agreed.

Your avatar is how you want to be represented to the world. It can be a mask, or a window into your soul, or a bit of both. I don't judge too much because I don't know the story behind most of them, but if your avatar is just the default one... well it doesn't give off a great first impression.

BTW: Anybody else not like it when people who aren't female set a female character as their avatar? I guess in my stupid brain you register automatically as a girl, and it's awkward when I finally click on your profile and discover you aren't. It's like finding out someone you knew just had a sex change operation.

I reverse discriminate. In that I believe TizzytheTormentor has the best avatar. It knows when you are looking at it...

Oh, I do it all the time. Every day. You don't see me do it because I'm polite enough to keep it inside of my head, but rest assured, fellow Escapists, if you've got one of those blank avatars or even one of the Escapist-given avatars, I am judging you. I am judging you with every last bit of my body and soul.

I use them primarily to distinguish between members. e.g Dragonbums' has been a little pink dragon for as long as i've been here, and even though it is currently a different little pink dragon, I still know who is posting without having to see the name. Lacktheknack's old one scared me and I like the feeling of safety sky14kemea's makes me feel.

Same here. Tizzy is always adorable, Caramel Frappe always has some hilarious Caramel related gif, Wykydtron's indifferent expression always accompanying his rants on Persona 3 protagonist, and Shrekfan... well... you know what? Nevermind.

Of all the arguments and prejudices I've been subjected to on this site, I don't think I've once been attacked based upon my choice of avatar.

For some time I've used a variety of "Cute girls doing tactical things" as my avatar. They may not be custom made, but I'd bet real shekels on no other person on the site having the same one.

I'm sure nobody notice or cares about them though...

I'm horrible with names, yet I am almost immediately familiar with people's avatars.

Which is why i immediately lose all recollection of someone when they switch theirs.

I tend to recognise folks by Avatar rather than name, so when for example fappy changed his cat avatar I thought he disappeared.

Caramel's theme of having a titicular drink in his/her gif helps when it changes.

However a default avatar with a low post count will be ignored, mainly because they tend to be trolls or spambots. Once the post count hits double figures and the poster hasn't been banned I'll start actually reading the content rather than skimming it for possible signs of bot activity.

When I read threads and post nothing, I do find it interesting to see the same avatars pop up a lot. So it makes for good recognition. Can't say I've really ignored reading someone's posts based on their avatar. Usually I'll start skimming if it's a long post and it is part of a 10 post debate train that turns into who can have a bigger wall of text. However, when actually posting something, like now, I do tend to try reading all the posts in a thread. It helps not just launching into a post that was covered nearly word for word 2 pages back.

That said, I might change my avatar sometime... I haven't read the web-comic mine is from in years. Not that anyone recognizes my posts because of how few posts I make!

Wait, you mean people are NOT their avatars? Unless you are not an actual anime character please stop lying to people!

Option 4.

Except for this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view] person who deserves all the hate for his/her avatar.

Avatars are convenient for recognition. Because names are hard to remember, grumble, grumble...

If I'm scrolling past text mindlessly, my AD-addled brain may stop on a colorful portrait. I like colors.

Oh, and if the post is somewhat intellectually stimulating. But mainly the color thing.
