Wait, you mean people are NOT their avatars? Unless you are not an actual anime character please stop lying to people!

Option 4.

Except for this [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view] person who deserves all the hate for his/her avatar.

I get confused if people start using avatars that have been in use by other people for a while. Or when there's some kind of "theme" day with a lot of people using the same one.

I'm less troubled by the default one actually, since that always triggers me to check the name anyway.

I quietly judge people's avatars (and I'm almost always impressed by the avatars I see people using), but their avatar doesn't impact how I feel about the content of their actual post. I read all of the posts in a thread anyway (unless it's asking me for my personal opinion on something, which is when I usually opt to skimread instead of actually read.)

No, I do not discriminate based on what your avatar or username is.
Arguments stand and fall on their own. It does not matter who presents them.

I have seen a lot of people trying to discredit others by pointing towards their avatar or their username, which is pretty much always a fallacy [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem], because it's irrelevant to the issue that's being discussed.

I tend to trust people who put their own face as their avatar like I do--it makes them accountable for their statements.

I understand why someone would choose not to and I respect that decision. This is just something I learned by growing-up: people who are directly accountable for their actions are typically trustworthy (not to say that the negative statement is true).

I don't discriminate, but I do tend to recognize a person on here by avatar.

I'll always recognize Daystar by his Okami avatar.

I'll always recognize Marter by his plethora of avatars of random girls.

I'll always recognize Caramel Frappe because he always puts a Caramel Frappe in his avatars.

As others have mentioned, you get the occasional "I cannot take a person with X avatar" seriously, and that is normally a MLP one. Even some people on here have said they don't like certain types, and there was a thread not too long ago complaining about .gif avatars and rules for how people "should" use them.

I don't care (in a negative way) what peoples avatars are myself, and I cannot for the life of me understand why anybody would. Unless it is something insulting, I don't really get why people would get worked up about it.

You can tell a lot about a person from their avatar.

I mean, I only recently replaced my black/white tree avatar. I can't say I discriminate against avatars.

I haven't discriminated against someone's avatar, but I have discriminated for avatars. If an avatar is particularly awesome or interesting, then I think that It lends more weight to their argument.
The only thing I do discriminate against is someone using the same or a virtually identical avatar as another person. I can usually tell the difference between any MLP avatars. Interestingly, this has not been more of a problem with MLP avatars than non-MLP avatars for me. (Despite me never watching the show.)

BTW: Anybody else not like it when people who aren't female set a female character as their avatar? I guess in my stupid brain you register automatically as a girl, and it's awkward when I finally click on your profile and discover you aren't. It's like finding out someone you knew just had a sex change operation.
My apologies if I've ever put you into awkward situations, Olas.

I'm not actually a dancing Japanese girl.

Usually what you are describing doesn't happen very often, at least not in recent memory. As others have said, people used to call each other out on having MLP avatars. I think that has since passed, though.

I can't really think of any examples of avatar discrimination other than that, sorry.

The only thing that makes me raise my eyebrows slightly is when I see a female avatar with bouncing boobies or an arse hanging out and see the poster ranting against the objectification of women. Lol... Although I've only seen that maybe twice but each time it made me laugh.

Like others I don't understand the thought process behind "I don't listen to people with [anime/pony/etc]" avatars because it makes me wonder what they're like in real life. It's effectively saying "You like something I don't so that means your opinion is invalid" and that's just childish.

There's people on here with avatars that I don't like but they give some very insightful posts. Then there is some people who have made a name for themselves as someone who really annoys me for half the shit they spout so I'll look about for their avatars and ignore their post.

I don't discriminate but it bugs the crap outta me when two people have the same avatar, unlikely as that is on ANY site, but less common on here than other sites I'm a member of.

Yessssss I rather DO like me some gifs because often I become mesmerized, especially if the subject matter is something I like or the loop is flawless. Yes, everyone's said it, I get a little annoyed sometimes as MLP avatars, but that's only if they're going on some speal that just makes them look dumb - i.e. Judging a book by its content, instead of the cover; they could have an avatar of Aristotle and I'd just end up feeling sad that they have such an avatar only to spout nonsense.

So no, I don't think there's much (if any) discrimination purely for avatars, though I won't blame a man for thinking of a group of avatars negatively for their mostly negative behaviour in forums.

And I like making my own avatars, that way if I HAPPEN to see someone else with the exact same avatar, I can lie in smug security that I had mine because it originated with me

I have on occasion been told my opinion is invalid because I have an anthropomorphic animal as my avatar, which apparently makes me a "furfag". Other that that I don't think people really do. Either you recognise someone's avatar and appreciate the reference or don't and it's just a way of distinguishing them in a way other than their name.

People have done that on the rare occasion for me because of my username xD It's actually more thought out than one would think but some people's thoughts are "omg she has wolf in her name she must be a furfag"

I don't hate on anyone, but dangit, I'm not a furry/furfag/etc and it makes me sad when people are shallow :(

Yes, I hate nearly all of you because you don't have Platinum Games-related avatars. So basically everyone besides j-e-f-f-e-r-s (I think anyway, it's awfully small), and Daystar just sneaks in to the non-hate with Okami since that was by Clover.

OT: No, I don't think people discriminate based on avatar. I certainly don't anyway.

I would like to think people know me by my avatar by now. Though I have a feeling since mine isn't a unique gif of some kind, I may not be as recognizable as others.

As for the discrimination of others, I don't care what people have as long as it isn't horribly tasteless, which I haven't seen any fit that description anyway. Just don't use Link's official portrait from Super Smash Bros. U and we're cool.

Yeah, even on forums as fine as these you still see some people discriminating against the use of various avatars for whatever reason. You see the odd person saying they don't like animated avatars, or MLP ones, or the default no-custom-avatar or whatever, which is a shame but to be fair I shouldn't imagine most people think like that. I certainly don't.

Haha, those theme days are wonderful. I have such good memories of the lacktheknack one and the chaos it caused.

I don't really have any kind of mental discrimination. I usually use avatars as an identifier, moreso than people's own usernames.
So when someone has something generic, I may not remember them.

Speaking of this, I should probably put my vials back on. I'm had chibi Jack long enough.
