For most cases it's the avatars, but after I've read a couple of good posts by someone name I start identifying them by both av and name.

Well if they have recognizable names like NoMoreSanity, they can change their avatar all the time and it won't throw me. But some people who I know for their avatars like whoever has the Hot Fuzz/Hot Fuss avatar (sirbryghtside) it would definitely mess me off if he changed it to a picture of a monkey or something.

There's a couple of people who I know the name of (normally because I see them post a lot i.e. 2000), but normally I just go by avatar. I would hope people recognize me by my avatar, as its much snappier then my username.

I generally remember names but if I'm glancing through a thread to see who has posted I'll scan across the avatars first. I always try and remember names as a sort of self-defence mechanism against the hordes of Vault-Tec logos there are out there.

I usually just see the avatar, try to remember where it comes from or references...usually add the person as a friend based on it...hooray foe being shallow

Mix of both.
If it's a good post, I'll remember their name. If it's just a catchy avatar, that's what they'll be remembered for.
Most of the people I usually talk with I remember both, though.
