This isnt meant to cause flame or fan boy style arguements.
I just wondered what people thought. I mean i liked them both, Avatar is a giant multi-million $ production with known actors/ directors, and district 9 seemed more underground cheapy film with a 'new' set of actors and directors.

Sooo whats your favourite?

I have yet to see both. Although, I did plan to see District 9.
But ended up in a Zombieland screening.

Was I the only one who cheered at the end of District 9? Loved this movie and can't wait to get it on DvD.

I haven't seen Avatar, but it would have to blow me away in order for it to beat District 9.
District 9 was incredible.
Great action, great story, smart social justice themes, touching characters...just awesome.

I think I will enjoy Avatar, but it'll be a popcorn flick.

Well I enjoyed District 9 extremely. It was just a good movie and it was increadibly well done in my opinon. Being a multi million dollar movie dosen't make a movie good and there are hundreds of examples of this.

I find it difficult to compare both these movies because aside from the 'alien / foreign race' theme they don't really have a lot in common.
Maybe it's just because it's been a while since I've seen District 9, but I'll have to go with Avatar on this one because it left a bigger impression on me than District 9... yes, the story is very basic, but it's amazingly well told, and it's simply stunning to watch. It really seems very difficult (for me, at least) to be disappointed by a James Cameron movie.
Also, I am a sucker for romance sub-plots, and regarding this aspect Avatar most certainly provides.

I saw the same thread on 4chan/tv/... ah well.
District 9 is my favourite by far, I don't know why, I just thought it had a better story.
