Avatar is far too cliched to be a truly excelent movie. District 9 on the other hand was an AWESOME surprise, it had 10% (if I remember correctly) of the budget which Avatar had yet managed to create something utterly original with insane action scenes and characters which caused you to actually care.

It also had a lightning gun which caused people to explode.

District 9 is, without a doubt, my movie of the year, perhaps even the decade (Which would make it movie of the Millenia, so far). I enjoyed every thing about that movie and truely hope that it succeeds. I understand why some people would be inclined to disagree with me, but I still love everything about it.

Saddly, I've yet to see Avatar, and am not really well equipped to compare the two. The trailers have showed me a great deal not to like, however. Dropping the whole "Dances with Smurfs," angle, it looks like the humans are not just antagonists, but they come off as the horribe cartoonish villians with no conscience at all. "We want this rare ore!" "But the Na'vi live there!" "Then we'll murder them and make more money than we can imagine." It just smacks of bad writing, but I really hope I'm wrong.

Did not mean to go on a rant like that.

Suffice to say, if you liked avatar more than D-9 I can't be associated with you in any way, shape, or form.

I really liked both, but I would have to say, as it's so huge and immersive, Avatar, but if you're thinking about buying DVDs/Blu-ray of them GET BOTH.
You will not regret it, unless you're a hater, are you a hater?

D9, no doubt in my mind, its just a better film in all! way more original, maybe not as many hot alien chicks, but i don't mind... D9 all the way!

Disrict 9 was a unique film and was fantastic.

District 9.

The budget of is District 9 vs. Avatar shows that creativity trumps overblown budgets. District 9 look fantastic. Avatar does too, but they sank so much money into it that it simply is not as impressive.

Avatar is also hamfisted, in your face hippie propaganda. It isn't really original, and the dialogue is pretty bad at parts. District 9, while the concept isn't new, isn't explored as much as the themes in Avatar. District 9 is much cooler in execution.

however they are both fantastic movies.

Avatar is a visual blast and maybe the most enjoyable "Experience" this year and has a masterful Showdown and Neytiri/Zoe Saldana as the most convincing "Digital Actor" since Gollum/Serkis in LOTR. And i really liked Worthington as a main character, while everyone else seems to hate him.

But District 9 not only has great visuals, but a pretty strong story (Avatar...well, it works, but isn't really that good) a even more unique feel and Shalto Copley (sp?)

So yeah, i like Avatar, but District 9 may very well be my favorite movie this yeah, soo it clearly wins.

EDIT: Oh, and i just wanted to add: Don't forget Star Trek. May be littered with plotholes, but other than that awesome throughout

you also have to understand earth is a dying planet the whole reason they left earth was to find resources.

Try me!
( I really liked both movies on the same scale, but still try me)
Try what, loathing the very fabric of your existence? That's already happening. It's happened.

I'm usually not one to be a hater, but I don't mind this time. I really don't.

kinda hard to compare the two since they deal with vastly different subjects and are about totally different things.

while both are sci-fi and have aliens, that's where the similarities end for the two of them. both take their own separate paths after that.

I have yet to see both. Although, I did plan to see District 9.
But ended up in a Zombieland screening.
Imagine that. I did the exact same thing.

Ok, that makes a lot more sense. I hadn't gotten that whole bit from the trailers or news yet. So, that's groovy. I just really hate it when the good guys are lily white and the bad guys are bad for the sake of being bad.
