Ack, why make me choose? Both fantastic movies... So close for me. In the end, I think my vote goes for... District 9. But again, VERY close for me. They are both on par with the other, in my opinion. Both great works of cinema, and I would strongly suggest seeing both for anyone who hasnt yet.

Yeah not so much on the vs. threads. try and come up with a more creative topic instead.
Or you could just go find a more 'creative' topic and leave this one to the people who actually have something to say, like the 60+ other people who have commented.

I have yet to see Avatar, but I saw District 9 (watched it on my computer because it wasn't a crappy ghost/horror movie and was thereby uninteresting to anyone I know) and thought that it was pretty damn sweet, although I did find the aliens acted a little too 'human' to be gigantic cat food-eating bug monsters.

Or I could be like half of those 60 who haven't seen both, or have only seen one movie, yet make a comment anyways.

Fuck'n really? *checks site*

Well butter my rump and bla bla bla. That doesn't make sense. If your work's cut out; how do you have a lot of it?

Is it okay to like both of them? Because I do.
I enjoyed both as well. But I will admit that Avatar surprised me, I didn't expect it to be as good as it was.
Same here. I mean, I had basically the entire plot figured out a month in advance just from watching the trailer, and there were a few bits of dialogue where the movie might as well have had a THIS WILL BE IMPORTANT LATER subtitle flash across the screen ("Only five people have ever ridden the taruk!", "Eywa doesn't take sides in a fight.", some other ones) and it occasionally got pretty hokey, but hey, the first Star Wars was hokey and predictable too and I still loved it. I also liked that, as one review put it, Cameron used the 3D to draw you into the movie, rather than hurling the movie out at you (you know, by having lots of cheap scares and actors throwing stuff at the camera and everything). I've seen it twice already, and plan on going back.
You forgot when he found out they can permanently transplant people into their Avatar bodies. When I saw that I was like there's no way he's going to stay in his crippled body... and I can't blame him, if I had that opportunity available I'd probably do it too.

See I hadn't seen any trailers but the teaser prior to seeing the movie. I only went because my sister wanted to see it bad and she wanted someone to go with her. She and I normally have very different tastes in films, but this one surprised me with the internal conflict that the characters (Jake and Neyteri) went through. I expected it to be a CGI orgy shoot'em up, which those are fun but not very engaging, but I'll be damned if that movie didn't make me shed a couple of tears.

And I agree about the 3D, prior to seeing the film I had heard from someone whose opinion I really trust when it comes to movies that the 3D was actually utilized to make the movie immersive (I don't think that's a word...) and not as just a gimmick, and after seeing it i have to agree. Every 3D movie I've seen up until now has just used it as a gimmick and only utilized it by either pointing at the camera A LOT or throwing things at it A LOT, in which case that movie could have been made sans 3D and probably not lost anything or actually have been better, whereas with Avatar I feel that seeing it in anything other than 3D would be a disservice to the film.

I will admit though that the social commentary in District 9 was told in a new and very interesting way that appealed to a new audience since it was told in manner in which it was (face it most people that go to see documentaries aren't generally your scifi crowd). District 9 was one of the smarter movies I saw this year, but if I'm going to judge on pure enjoyability I have to give it to Avatar.

I'm actually going to go see it again this afternoon making it on of the few movies I've ever seen more than once in the theatre.

District 9 is the winner for me. Avatar was really good but I didn't think it was the second coming like so many other people did.

I just got round to seeing avatar last night and i was bored senseless. it was quite possibly the worst script iv ever heard being used to preach at me for 2 and a half hours.

District 9 on the other hand was flocking awesome from beginning to end.

I also found Avatar to be completely and utterly boring. The story I managed to predict most of, due to the themes and the not so subtle hints at what was to come. Also even though the Na'vi (HEY LISTEN) looked great, behind the CGI was a poorly developed culture of treehuggers that really stirred no emotion in me. Overall, whilst the scenery created was extremely well done the movie itself lacked anything interesting behind it to back up it supposedly groundbreaking visuals. I also wanted to kill myself after long exposure to MANLY MAN MARINE BOSS MAN WITH SCARS ON HIS MANLY HEAD OORAH! That was just a terrible character.

D9 on the other hand held me captivated throughout the whole movie. Whilst it was no where near as visually astounding as Avatar, the gritty feeling of the setting kept the story down to Earth making it seem like something that could truly eventuate. The Prawns also managed to reflect human behaviour which in turn helped me empathise with them despite their obvious dissimilarity to humans, simply their reactions to their treatment from MNU (the Christopher Johnson in the Lab scene in particular) and interestingly enough their eyes. Also even though the "final battle" in D9 didn't have the great scope that Avatar did, it actually kept me interested through both the use of those insane weapons and what was going on around them in relation to the characters.
While in Avatar I didn't really care when main Na'vi characters were being killed off in quick succession
While sometimes D9 can have a bit of an amateur feel to it, overall it was far more intelligent and I personally found the environment and characters (the aliens in particular) to be far more interesting due to the development of the story.

(Isn't it funny that there are so many posts about why D9 is the favourite and barely any ones supporting Avatar, let alone ones that present an actual point, and there are 22 votes for it?)

Also Avatar did not spend that much, Spider Man 3 spent more the last adventure of Jack Sparrow and CO. spent more and I'm pretty sure that the last Transformers spent more.
Pirates of the Carribean 3: $300,000,000
Spiderman 3: $258,000,000
Avatar: $237,000,000
Transformers 2: $200,000,000
District 9: $30,000,000

Sorry about that nice big post...

District 9. By a long shot. I mean, Avatar was easy on the eyes and easy to digest, but District 9 was poignant, powerful, and actually had a good message.

I am a seventeen-year-old girl, and I'd much rather be a prawn than a Na'vi. At least for one day:) No, really, I would.
