It wasn't particularly original, not that much is or ever was, but it was a well made derivative work.

It's sort of like Michaelangelo's statue of David (but blue and in a loincloth!). Sure, it provides no real insight on the topic it handles (most people probably aren't even aware that the giant naked Italian guy is supposed to be the shrimpy modestly dressed Jewish guy who killed Goliath, even if they see his slingshot...no, not that slingshot!)but it is so beautifully done that the viewer ceases to care that it fails to say much of anything special.

They were also both made by well regarded artists so the flaws get a free pass. Give it time and Avatar will be just as much a classical piece of art as what is supposed to be 'David'.

I did not like it. Not one bit.
At the first i thought it looked kind of nice, i liked how humans looked almost like they were realy in that SGI lab. I really tried to like, i heard that Avatar was not that very good, but i thought 'Oh, fuck you, you are just hating on a popular movie', then i saw it was like....meeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhg....hhhhh.
I hated the characters, i hated how aliens looked, i hated the plot with the flying rocks and stuff, i hated the way they put their cables in animals. I was bored! And disgusted at some points, like when the guy had sex with an alien ...and everytime aliens opened their mouths to say something.
They did not look real, they were creepy! It looked like their face was always melting and when they smiled i looked away, i was so grosed out.
Ok, they are doing something with the technology, ok, i get that, but why this Fernguly plot? Why rip off something like that? Why not rip off good movies?

You know, the plot was simple and unoriginal, but so was the plot of taken, and that was a fucking awesome movie. They both were. I would even put forth Avatar as my favorite movie ever. It isn't a plot-driven movie, so I didn't care about the plot.
