It wasn't particularly original, not that much is or ever was, but it was a well made derivative work.
It's sort of like Michaelangelo's statue of David (but blue and in a loincloth!). Sure, it provides no real insight on the topic it handles (most people probably aren't even aware that the giant naked Italian guy is supposed to be the shrimpy modestly dressed Jewish guy who killed Goliath, even if they see his slingshot...no, not that slingshot!)but it is so beautifully done that the viewer ceases to care that it fails to say much of anything special.
They were also both made by well regarded artists so the flaws get a free pass. Give it time and Avatar will be just as much a classical piece of art as what is supposed to be 'David'.
