I think Nostalgia Critic is better, but AVGN is also very good. The AVGN led me into deeper parts of the internet, however, and that's a plus.

I like both. Early AVGN is the funniest shit ever whereas current stuff isn't as good (still funny though, just nothing über-hilarious that had me in stitches like the Bugs Bunny sketch). Nostalgia Critic is the reverse: he wasn't as good early on but he's really found his niche and does well.
I've heard of both, though I've kind of fallen off watching the Nerd's videos.
Still, it was through the AVGN that I learned of the Nostalgia Critic (during the "feud"), whose stuff I love. And through the NC, I learned of Linkara, Nostalgia Chick, and the other parts of That Guy With the Glasses (though I only watch maybe half...I kind of wish Read Right to Left would update again).
I'd learned about Spoony on my own around the same time as I found the AVGN. His stuff is pretty good, too (I'm still really fond of the Dragon Strike video...and Dirty Dynasty Warriors Dancing).

I don't even see how it's a contest. The Nostalgia Critic provides great movie reviews with creative humour, and AVGN shouts streams of swear words at 8-bit games whilst drinking heavily.

The AVGN resorts to calling every thing ASS and constantly bringing the game back to comparisons of shit. The Nostalgia Critic has no sense of timing. The best example is his saved by the bell episode where he just forces laughter for five minutes at Zac's outfit. He also states the bloody obvious over and over. He will say something annoying that he noticed, roll the clip of the annoying thing then sub in his own voice to do the exact same thing. Which is why my favouite episode was when he didn't speak for Good Son.
Spoony is funny but only when his stuff is scripted otherwise it is just him sitting in a chair ranting over and over while taking breaks to drink coke. Linkara is fine except for that recent clip where he reviewed cool world with the girl with the hoarse voice. What irked me was that joke where he was acting sexist towards the female character despite going on incredibly long rants in his Wonder Woman review about how he was a femenist.
