Poll: Awesome looking Valve game, and free?!

I wish people would stop praising Valve for this, Alien Swarm came out originally years ago as a mod for the Unreal 2 engine, created by the fantastic Black Cat Games modder group, same guys behind the Thievery mod as well.

And you know what? It was awesome then, and it looks even better now. Not to completely deny Valve credit; It's great how much support they're giving this project. But still, it wasn't developed by them.

Look for yourself.

I look forward to it regardless, as mentioned the original mod was extremely fun and this looks like an improvement in every way possible.

Didn't Valve "acquire" Black Cat games recently though, as they've done with so many other modder groups in the past, and now they're paying them to develop a variation of their game for the Source engine (only this time it's free)? Because technically then those modders are part of Valve now, so by praising Valve we're praising them. ^^

Plus technically I'm just as happy about it being free as I am excited about the game itself, free stuff is awesome!

The word that draws my initial attention here is FREE that being said, it is more the lack of word that deters it. That lacking word is Mac. Guess it just wasn't meant to be

Out of curiosity, why? A majority of the best games and even films have had a mature (restricted) rating. I guess I would attribute this to media that is not restricted is being catered towards younger audiences which usually = bad.

I'm not sure but given the fact that Valve have already done the hard work of converting the 2009 Source engine to run on the Mac, and the fact that they've just released DoD:S for the Mac so they're still slowly adding games, it seems likely at some point in the future both the L4Ds will be patched to work with Macs as well, and most likely this game, there's always hope my friend.

Also judging from one of the screenshots on the Steam page it looks like there's going to be 4 separate classes:

* Medic
* Tech
* Officer
* Sp. weapons

Valve represents improper grammar (They can't capitalize anything properly) bad ideas in shooters that infect other games through their popularity, and are the largest source of Digital Distribution. I refuse to support anything they do unless it's something like Portal which looks like an attempt for them to change their ways on moral grounds.

I'm not really a Valve fanboy or anything here... but what 'bad ideas' are we talking about?

I mean, the only FPS's they've made that had a major impact on gaming are CS, TF series, and Half Life.

I can see you hating the narrative style of Half Life... but what is there to hate about TF2? Class-based combat? What about CS?

I mean, rambling on about how Valve ruined vidjamagames is fine, but... why?

Pandering to the "achievement whore" crowd again valve? I will try this game when it comes out but I'm predicting a lack of substance and poor controls. We will see.

It looks like if you used a controller it would be a DSS.

It looks like Alien Breed on the XBL (which is a DSS). Only difference I can see is the 4 player co op over the 2 the XBL has. Even the story sounds the same.

Hey guys, I did a quick search and didn't see anything so sorry if this has been posted before and I missed it, but a friend of mine pointed this out to me and I thought it looked awesome!

It's a free game being released in a few days by a group of devs from Valve (and sorry to sound like the fanboy I am, but they DO have an awesome track record), and it features an updated version of the Source engine that will launch with the game code publicly available (as well as an updated SDK, which is what I'm pretty interested in). The game itself looks pretty awesome to me, just a basic fun third person shoot-em-up, so what do you guys think, anyone up for a game? =D

To me, it looks like something that VALVe just threw together during a weekend (VALVe time translation: about six months). I'm not so sure it'll be good.
