Welp, it's me again, now with new, improved, more poll choices. Since thinking more about my potential Future Name (the prospect of which is kind of scary) yesterday, I've thought about some more choices. I like these names, too. What do you think?

Sorry for cloggin' up the boards with a second thread. This is just kind of terrifying, the whole "picking your name for the rest of your life" thing.

I don't know if it's personal, but I reckon we need your last name so we can pick a good first name to go with it. Well I believe it's important.

o_O dude, I think this situation is kind of like tattoos.

I had to look up your other thread to find out exactly what you need the name for but the best way I could think to solve it is to pick a name and go by it for a couple of months, if it doesn't 'fit' then try another one.

You're clearly sold on that Julius one so try a few weeks/months identifying AS Julius and see how it goes before doing the legal switch. At least, that's what I'd suggest, if you don't feel it then you can always try out Duncan or Alex too.

Also, little off-topic but I am curious, why did you make an account here solely to ask the question? Like, does the Escapist have a rep for this? No offence to... well, all of us, I guess, but I would've thought friends and family would be the first go to.

I'm torn between Arthur and Duncan xD both are strong names and are more uncommon. I haven't met an Arthur before and I only know two Duncans (both are in my family) but that's only my experience and might be different in other parts of the world.

Hm... Julius has the benefit of historical reverence. You can use 'Et tu, [Name]' whenever someone betrays you too.

Alex can be used for either gender, so it may not be the best if you're going for a more masculine vibe.

Never liked the name "Duncan" as it just sounds like what you do when you play basketball...not when I play, mind, as I am white and jumping is not one of my race's strong suits, at least according to media and my personal life experience.

Arthur makes me think of King or that bipedal aardvark with the glasses.

Take your time with this decision, m8. It'll be with ya for a good while after all, so it's best to take as much time as is necessary for you to come to a comfortable decision. Just remember to base it on what YOU want, rather than letting other people influence the decision.

Julius is a pretty fine name in my opinion.

Also congrats on transitioning. I wish you the best.

Yes. And your credit card number. For.. uh... legitimate reasons.

Seriously though, go with Alex. Always a good name.

No offense taken, I get the curiosity behind the question. Honestly, I've been inundating my friends constantly with information about my transition, and what's happening with access to hormones, and names, of course, and I feel like they deserve a break. I don't want trans stuff to be all I talk about with any of my friends, and I don't want them to start feeling that my conversations are becoming repetitive, even though I'd rather be talking about this stuff with them. I made a couple threads on reddit but I remembered that this forum has a polling option, so I came here instead. I would use my old account, but I don't want potentially embarrassing trans-stuff (I might decide all these names were incredibly awful choices) linked to my username.

For the past month or so, they've been calling me Adrian, actually. Before that, it was Chris. Basically, it's been: Christopher for a few days > Chris for a few weeks > Blake (for a day or two) > Adrian, and then Julius now with a couple of my friends. The others, I'm too embarrassed to tell them I've switched again. I think they've defaulted to calling me my birth name again when I'm not around, which I don't mind (I gave them permission to do that, so it's okay. I mean, I prefer a male name, but it alleviates some confusion).

My last name is uh... Oh, I know what, I've got a solution: It's "rivas", but with a "D" at the start. (That way, this thread won't show up if people googled any of those names in combination with my surname! Ha!). I'm not giving you my old first name, though.

On another note, I kind of like Duncan, even while most people have an averse reaction to it, seemingly. There's a certain humble quality that "Julius" lacks. I'd be okay with Julius if I were prime minister, but, as much as I like the name, it's just too uppity for everyday life. Soz, FalloutJack and others. Maybe "Declan" is a possibility?

Mm, yeah, that's what scares me. It's such a ginormous change and it's sort-of permanent, unless I want to go through the heartache of going back into the choosing yet another name phase. All the other permanent changes, I'm more than delighted with. My old name, however, is one of the parts of me I've never had as much of an issue with. I mean, I dislike that it's a name used for women and thus don't want to associate myself with it, but I don't dislike the name itself. If it were a name used for men as well, I' absolutely continue using it. Anything else still feels strange.

I keep waiting for a name to "click", but I've spent countless hours pouring over baby name websites and forums, looked over thousands upon thousands of names, and none of them have triggered that instantaneous "Yes! That's the perfect name for me!" effect. I think there's no use in continuing to look, I've just got to pick one I've already considered so far, even with the drawbacks of that choice. There aren't any names out there without one pitfall or another.

So, on that note, here are my reasons for liking and not-liking these names as a permanent-forever-name-for-myself:

Julius: The classic. I like it because it's European. Roman, technically, but I read somewhere it can also be linked to Greek lexicon (which is cool, because I have a Greek parent. Not great at speaking it, though.) It's intellectual to a certain degree, and I feel like if I met someone called Julius, I'd want to talk to them more. I feel like it doesn't gel with a more laid-back personality, though, which is a drawback.
Alex: Cool name. Generic. I know probably four or five Alexes. Also, a typical trans name. Seriously, in ftm spaces, "Alex" is the number one choice for trans guys. Afraid of seeming predictable if I go with this one.
Duncan: With this name, I associate it with two specific fictional characters (well, one of them not fictional, technically): Shakespeare's King Duncan, and Professor Ian Duncan from Community. Also, a friend's dad back in primary school had this name. He was pretty personable and a bit of a goofball. I like this name for its understated humbleness, but maybe it's a little too simple for an academic setting. I dunno, there's just something about this name that I keep coming back for.
Arthur: This one was more a wildcard. Feels very British.
Bonus that I added on later (Declan): Got to thinking about this one after mulling over Duncan a bit. I dunno about this one yet, I'm still putting together my thoughts.

Gah, choosing a name is a huge decision, yo.

I know it's a joke, but so many people use their full name for usernames it falls flat for me.

Just asked for the last, that's all. Thanks.

Now I can match 'em up. Julius sounds silly, Alex seems the most effective to me, Duncan is alright, Arthur is alright too. I don't know how to pronounce Declan.

Alex maybe common, but it suits your surname in way it sounds more balanced and heavier I reckon.

Would you like if I post up more names that I believe are suitable?

Edit: Accidently selected Arthur

Absolutely! Go ahead. At this point, I'm taking any and all suggestions into consideration.

If you need any character reference, I'm five foot six, can be described either as "happy go-lucky", "incredibly depressing" (I know that's not helpful with the last one, but I think both are true, oddly) or "intelligent" by my friends. I have an ironic sense of humour, tend to be pretty energetic and make a lot of hand gestures while talking. This is all a self-description, so obviously it might be tampered by bias. I'm a history major in uni. I do a lot of art in my spare time and talk about comics a lot. I have brown hair and olive/tan skin.

Just remember to accept that you will find some better name once the change has been approved, and you will wish you'd have chosen that one instead.

That happened to me when I changed my name legally back in 2009, and it happens to almost everybody else too.

Oh sweet, another name-changer. Hope you don't mind a few questions.

How do you feel having a name that you feel isn't as perfect as it could've been? Are you mostly over it, and totally comfortable now with the one you picked? Does it feel just as natural now as your birthname? Also, do you feel like the name 'grew on you' and you 'grew into the name' as you used it more?

If it helps (and it totally doesn't), I can't even begin to imagine changing my name. I don't think I'd be able to find a suitable replacement, considering all of the memories, people, and places tied to it and my continual...I guess 'resonance' with it? If that makes (it doesn't) sense?

So, rest assured, your task isn't an easy one, by any stretch, and it's entirely possible that you'll wind up being unsatisfied with whatever name you eventually hitch onto.

I'm sure many a person in your shoes/slippers/heels/boots/flipflops/crocs/hoversneakers feels the same way.

Are there...I guess, masculine versions of your current name that don't immediately repulse you? Though I suppose that would be a bit cliche too, right?

Hmph. Regardless, good luck to ya in this endeavor.

There are worse ways to clog up the boards.

Anyway, you don't have to stick with it. Your first choice doesn't have to be final. In fact, you might want to walk around with it for a while and see if it feels right.

Then again, this is based on my own experience, and may not reflect that of others.

(Also, I voted for Alex, but go with Duncan if your last name is MacLeod. Because that would be badass)

EDIT: I don't know why I keep screwing up the quote process today.

Ha, I'm borderline spamposting on this thread, but I'll reply to this too.

My first name is unequivocally female. No male equivalent, except the obscure name of an ancient Greek playwright. No dice there.

I did try the "male version of own name" with my middle name, though. I won't give list the exact name here, since I've decided I really don't like it, but anyway, yeah, it didn't work for me.

Weirdly enough, I have more resonance with the name "Zachary" than my birth name, and it's not my real name, either. I mean, I don't know if this is particularly common, but who knows? If you changed your name, you might not feel so attached as you thought.

Maybe.
