If Galactica fights tactically instead of just going one on one, then it could win. All it would take would be for a couple of Raptors with nukes to ftl jump inside the enterprises shields. Or they could load up on marines and go for a boarding action. They would win because the majority of the enterprise crew are pussies in red shirts. Of course, the inevitable sword fight between Kirk and Adama would be awesome.

Well, the Enterprise would probably tell Battlestar that they're peaceful and would like to be friends.

Accccctually, the Enterprise from TNG shows actually passes as a Battleship in Federation terms - every wondered why an 'explorer' would be packing so many phaser banks, heavy shields and freaking photon torpedoes?saejox said:

That thing takes MULTIPLE nukes through the series, and can dish them out, and its rail cannon battery would pound through a Fed's energy shield in no time.Have you seen how fast basestars fall apart to those guns? Think how long it takes for Star-trek ships to actually do much damage to hull with their energy weapons beyond scorching. Hell, I remember an ep of Voyager where it gets nailed by a Borg torp - sure, it got a hole in its hull, but it still flew away. Fed weappns are a bit lack-lustre
Well the only reason Galactica is the best ship in its time is because the outdated lack of AI on the ship made it impervious to Cylon virus'. Against the Enterprise it would be outclassed.

Enterprise wouldn't even need it's shields, just the navigational ones.
lasers, which Galatica has, wouldn't even penetrate the navigational shields and neither would the raptors machine guns go through them.
secondly nuclear weapons, they won't do much to the enterprise at all, once again it's shields. the enterprise can go through a sun and live, so a nuclear explosion would be nothing.
now on to what would happen to Galatica
the raptors would be easily cut down by the phasers and utterly destroyed by the photo torpedoes.
the same goes for the Galatica and any ship in the colonial fleet.
so needless to say any ship in the colonial fleet would be cut down and destroyed by the Enterprise without even breaking a sweat
Enterprise. Picard if the battle is solely in space. Kirk if there is a secondary hand to hand fight on ground. I know I?m going to be torn down for that, but Picard was a better tactician in my opinion.

the reason nobody uses shells and nukes in the Star trek universe is because it doesn't work against shields.
Phasors also make massive cube cities of the Borg explode into miniscule particles. Armor is little help here.

Enterprise- Exploration ship with the bridge (along with every senior officer and major piece of electronic equipment) exposed by a giant window. Armed with a few lasers and torpedoes. The crew is a combination of explores, scientists and security personnel.
Galactica- A much larger warship, with sensitive areas deep inside a hull covered in several yards of armor plate. Armed with batteries upon batteries of main guns and point defense batteries. Several nukes and a full compliment of Vipers and Raptors. The crew is almost entirely military veterans, experienced pilots (Apollo, Starbuck, Helo, Athena), or combat hardened Marines (who wear body armor)
Enterprise will fire the lasers which will bounce harmlessly off Galactica's exterior, causing Adama to launch Vipers which destroy the shields of the Enterprise. Raptors are launched and a boarding party under Col. Tigh take over the ship and the crew of the Enterprise is either killed or captured for further interrogation by Admiral Cain and Lt. Thorne on the Pegasus. Galactica fires a nuke to the giant window of the bridge, destroying the ship in spectacular fashion.
