When you started with Battletech and Heavy Gear I thought you were talking about the games. But you added in Gundam and Robotech.
Gundam is of course, it's the grandaddy, the father of all real type mech series. Taking it's influence from sci-fi novels before it like Starship Troopers and War of the Worlds Gundam took the idea of a piloted giant robot to a whole new level. Now with Gundam being 30 years old and they're still making them, granted that's because Gundam is Bandai's cash cow and they re-invent it with every new series. Some are better than others of course.

Heavy Gear started as a game that was influence by the anime series AT Votoms.

Battletech is a game originally called Battledroids, but was change to avoid a lawsuit from Lucas. Had some original designs but used knock off designs from various anime mecha (Macross, Dougram, Crusher Joe,)

Robotech is actually 3 different anime series meshed into a different story line. Although it's amazing how much Robotech's first part follows Macross' story and plot. But it diverts a long way during Robotech's 2nd and 3rd parts from the original anime.

All this just makes Gundam the best.

I've always preferred Battletech to Gundam. I liked the idea of the Mech's being giant walking tanks in the form of behemoths, with each looking significantly different. The whole Gundam thing looks too human and results in looking more like oversized power armor, also (for me at least) they all look far too similar. The slower pace of the Battletech mechs is also better if you ask me. Gundams being so fast makes them feel smaller than they are supposed to be and just makes them feel even more like power armor and less like the plodding behemoths of death in Battletech.
On top of that I just prefer the Battletech universe.

All in all you just can't beat a madcat (or an atlas or a bushwacker or an uziel or... (this list continues for some time))
(Unless you can't tell I'm not all that into anime)

Macross VF mechs. Please for the love of all don't insult the Super Dimension Fortress Macross with Robotech name. Because, lets face it, only good anime in that censored and cut compilation was Macross.

Gundam is my favorite of these, there is just so much variety in the Gundam series. My personal favorite is Gundam Seed.

Out of that list? Battletech. I absolutely loathe Gundam. I can't say much about the other two.

My first taste of mechs was shooting arms off of giant robots in Mechwarrior 2, so I gotta say Battletech.

Basically what RastaBadger said, everything in the Mechwarrior games makes you feel like your in the pilot seat of a 100 ton steel death-machine. And I also think that the look of the mechs in the Battletech universe is very diverse. At least more diverse than Gundam, and I've watched a lot of Gundam.

But there really is no "best" mech universe. I just like Battletech because I grew up with it, and I like the look and feel of the mechs.

Edit: And I have to say;
All hail Clan Wolf, All hail the benevolent Timberwolf

...That is all.

I'll go with Robotech. There was just something about Super Dimension Fortress Macross that made people fall in love with it. The second and third seasons which were different animes made me ill they were so bad. One of them had some woman who was supposed to be Max's child but it was obvious it was a different cartoon and the other just made my head hurt. I don't even remember what happened. I think I blocked it out to retain my sanity.

What's really funny about Battletech is that they rip mechs straight out of Robotech, complete with the Robotech Defense Force symbol. That made me laugh when I saw it.

Mech Assault for the Xbox is still my favorite Mech game, but taking everything into account, Robotech is #1.
The mechs are the most realistic, the most flexible and awesome, and combat seems to be more about skill instead of "I have the giant super awesome technology thingy that makes me a god that can never be destroyed" (which is the essence of Gundam -_-)

Robotech also has the best anime overall. The original season of Robotech is a fucking classic, and a must-watch for any mech anime fan (I'd even say any anime fan, but that is a bit of a stretch). Gundam's anime sucks. The first season was pretty good, but just about every other Gundam anime is just so blahhhh

Heathen! All will fall before the mighty Clan Ghost Bear.

*ahem*

Anyway, yeah....my vote goes to Battletech as well.

Not just because I think the mechs are "cooler" and far more varied and believable, but the story-verse is just more expansive and vastly more fleshed-out than any of the other mech series the OP listed.

I mean, as much as I've liked some of the Gundam-verse series (the original, 0080, 0083, 8th MS team) The story itself is a bit...limited. The entirety of all Gundam stories would basically fit into one era of Battletech lore.

Plus, a lot of the themes within Battletech remind me of Frank Herberts classic "Dune". I.E. the classic royal family struggles that plunge entire sectors into wars.

What Gundam series did you watch? Gundams are only the most powerful suits at the beginning of their respective series. By the end of it, the suits are pretty average, it's just that the pilots are good enough not to die as easily as they should.

Seriously, which Gundam series did you watch? Because I've never seen anyone who wasn't a huge fan of the series prefer 0079 to anything else. Even the ones that love it usually point out that it was kind of experimental and that Zeta Gundam (the sequel series) did pretty much everything it did better. Also that the compilation movies were better than the series itself.

OT: As much as I love Battletech (seriously, when did the 40K expanded universe get more popular than the Battletech one?), I have to go with Gundam. My avatar is Amuro Ray for cryin' out loud.

Edit: You also lose points for liking Mechassault. When it came out, I was so pissed that we got that instead of Mechwarrior 5 XD

MechAssault 1 and 2, as Battletech-verse lore goes, were pretty shit. They took some plot lines from various sagas and...well...put rather odd twists on them.

However, MechAssault the games were pretty damn fun. I still have fond memories of playing them online with friends.

Sure, they were a lot less "simulation-y" than MechWarrior, but they were still really good action games. I think some fans give them far too much flak.

On a side note, I've been in the Reign of Thunder beta for about 2 months now, and it's fairly fun. Definitely harkens back to Day 1 Studios days of MechAssualt.
