I don't think that one really counts, as it started out in English. We're talking about dubs here, animes that were originally in another language (usually Japanese) and then dubbed over with English later.TheFacelessOne said:
The problem with dubs is often humor or character personalities are lost in translation, or if someone like 4Kids gets ahold of it, they severely dumb it down for a younger audience and edit physical parts of the show out (like making one character's omnipresent cigarette into a lollipop, so the show doesn't "promote" smoking). Either that, or often the voice acting seems strained or doesn't fit the lip movements and actions well.
However, I think what they've done with Hayao Miyazaki's movies is quite impressive. Only a few times do things seem awkward with the lip movements (which, quite honestly is inevitable with the media they're working with), and the quality of the voice acting is top-notch.
Um... Not for nothing, but this has been done before. A few times, in point of fact. I'm not angry, but it's worth noting.

For my money, I'm going with either Full Metal Panic (Panic, screw that alchemist stuff), or RahXephon. Though, I'd be remiss not to mention Hellsing, since (a) it was done well, and (b) Chrispin Freeman rocks my socks off. Other notable shows would be Revolutionary Girl Utena (accepting the lower production quality in general, the voice work was top notch), Kaleidostar (don't judge me), D.N Angel, and really anything released by ADV over the last decade or so.

It depends on the translation, really. In most cases, I've enjoyed the English dub more, especially if the localization team was worth anything. I'll give you an example (based on my watching of, and a friend's watching of, D.N Angel). I watched the dub, he watched the sub/speaks Japanese. At one point, the main character is scaling a cliff, and loses his footing. The original Japanese has him making a linguistic joke about the noise his pet makes, which phonetically sounds like the Japanese word for "steep". In the English, they Woolseyed the joke into "that was just a gravity check", which was much more humorous for me. Almost any joke based on Japanese linguistics or culture falls flat with me (for as much as I enjoy anime, I'm not really into Japanese either as a language or a culture).Lilani said:

Ghost in the Shell (Both films and the S.A.C. series and film). I hated the dub of The Laughing Man and Individual Eleven (OVA's or whatever they'd be classed as) because it took a great cast from the originals and replaced them all ='[
Trigun is also another great dub, it felt wierd when watching the subbed version because of it.
Evangelion had a good dub aswell, and just like Trigun it felt wierd watching it with subs (Lets hope theres a dub of the Rebuild of Evangelion with the original cast)
And finally, all of the Studio Ghibli films i've seen (Nausicaa, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away) have also had great dubs, and from what i've heard everything else of theirs has great dubs aswell.

I voted for Cowboy Bebop, because it's simply amazing. I also show it to any of my friends who think anime = pokemon and then they realize it's not so childish.
However, I think Samurai Champloo is just as good, but they are made by the same creators so it's no surprise.

subs are better? i mean it's not like dubs can miss what characters are saying or horribly abbreviate what the charcters are saying OR mistranslate and totally miss what they are saying.Abedeus said:
subs are just as bad, if not worse than dubs. dubs don't really cut out a lot of dialog like subs do. it might mistranslate somethings like subs do. if you don't believe me, try watching a movie with the subtitles turned on and see how much it misses
as for me, i don't have a favorite. the dub doesn't really matter, it's more the story that i like
Of course subs are better. You hear the original voices, you don't suffer through "voice actors". And don't forget that sometimes it takes a lot, lot more time to say something in English than in Japanese or Chinese. But if you read fast, you can read 2 or 3 sentences before the character stops talking.cleverlymadeup said:
Also, I tried watching even Doctor House without English subtitles. I usually watch Polish ones, but someone kept screwing up with the translation (even on very basic stuff, like verbs or adjectives) and I decided to watch first without anything... God, I couldn't understand some of the medical stuff. It's just too hard for someone who hasn't spent at least 4-5 years in England or USA. With the subtitles it was a lot easier to understand all the conditions, diseases and so on.
