Technically, NONE of the games you listed are "beat 'em ups". Those moreso go under fighting games, of which beat'em ups are a subgenre.Circus Ascendant said:How are these beat 'em up games??? They're all just action or action adventure, surely? I was expecting the poll to look something like this:
Street Fighter
Mortal Kombat
Tekken
Virtua Fighter
Dead Or Alive
Soul Calibur
Super Smash Bros (at a stretch)
And so on and so forth.
I've not played all of those (just most) but the only one that I think even comes close to qualifying for being even called a beat 'em up is Streets of Rage!
All my life I have called these games (and seen them referred to as) "Beat 'Em Ups" and never been called out on it until this point, but perhaps times and perceptions change.TheSKSpecial said:Technically, NONE of the games you listed are "beat 'em ups". Streets of Rage, Final Fight, Godhand, Urban Reign, River City Ransom, Beat Down, Yakuza (in a pinch), games where it's one person versus many, where weapons can be dropped and there's usually a boss fight at the end of a stage are traditionally known as beat'em ups.
DMC, NG, and GOW are moreso known as action games (most likely due to the main character permanently carrying a weapon) than beat 'em ups. They'd be more like slash'em ups.
Really? I thought you had kinda already admitted that the only real "beat'em up" available in the poll was SoR. I wasn't trying to call you out on it, but I was just saying that games like SF, MK, Tekken, etc. are more similar to each other than SoR, Final Fight, and so on. And DMC, NG, etc. are in a different category than the other two.Circus Ascendant said:All my life I have called these games (and seen them referred to as) "Beat 'Em Ups" and never been called out on it until this point, but perhaps times and perceptions change.
None taken buddy, if I had then my post would have been far more venomousTheSKSpecial said:Really? No offense intended.
Cool...and I did completely forget about the awesome Double Dragon, shame on me.Circus Ascendant said:None taken buddy, if I had then my post would have been far more venomous
It's mainly things like God Of War, DMC - I wouldn't class those as Beat 'Em Ups, but we seem to agree on that. Streets of Rage I do definitely see, as with the oft-mentioned but not actually featured Double Dragon, so =)
