I would have to go with Call of Duty: United Offensive as my favourite, with Call of Duty 3 and the original Call of Duty both tied for a close second.

Call of Duty lost it for me when it forgot what it did best, namely putting you in wartime experiences. Call of Duty games always tried to replicate the experience of certain battlefield scenarios. The most memorable Call of Duty moments aren't the different weapons you can use or hectic gunfire, it's switching seats in a rapidly deteriorating B17 or sitting amongst soldiers in a silent glider until it crash lands behind enemy lines, or staging a silent raid on a rail bridge or a battleship or storming the cliffs at Point du Hoc only to be forced back by an overwhelming counter attack. Even in CoD4 you had the memorable sniper mission in Pripyat and to a lesser extent the Spectre Gunship mission, (which at that point in time was different and new.) Probably the most memorable Call of Duty moment ever didn't involve any shooting at all.

World at War was the last one that I felt they were even trying to do this but even then it was going over old footage with their Stalingrad Sniper mission just a re-attempt at the Pripyat mission from CoD4 and their Catalina mission trying to be the aforementioned B17 mission from United Offensive. They were okay but it just confirmed to me that they had run out of ideas. I guess it just got old.

Now it seems to be just running and gunning, the only attempt at anything 'impressive' just bigger explosions, more destruction and different military hardware to use. I think they got better at telling a story but much worse at delivering an experience - and to be honest the story in a popcorn blockbuster explosion-fest is never going to be worth the sacrifice of a decent experience.

It's gone from feeling like Ridley Scott and Steven Speilberg to feeling like Brett Ratner and Michael Bay and it did it gradually as they just ran out of ideas and were forced to adhere to Activision's yearly release schedule.

I would love to see another great Call of Duty game but to be honest I don't think we'll see this unless Activision gives the franchise a break. It's tired, let it recoup, let it recover and let it come back with something that will blow our minds. Not this yearly addition crap, it's just fucking boring.

I played the first two games. 4 is the best. I guess that makes me so beneath your perfect, indisputable taste.
It makes you unable to see a good game when you come across one.
Right, because when I played Half Life, Ocarina of Time, RDR and so on I thought they were all terrible. Naturally.

WAW for me. Good campaign, good online (until it got hacked to all hell), and LOCAL MULTIPLAYER. Also Nazi Zombies was good fun. Also... LOCAL MULTIPLAYER!!!

MW2 is the worst for me. MW was a promising series, but MW2 shat all over it. Not bought a CoD game since.

Actually Black Ops is the sequel to WaW.
Well, it had some of the same characters at least.
No, I'm pretty sure black ops is independent in that way
Considering WaW was based much earlier...

I voted for Modern Warfare but to be fair that's only because of CoD4. Which was awesome. WaW was okay. Everything else since has been a boring re-hash. CoD1 was okay for it's time, but it never grabbed me like CoD4 did. And I didn't care for CoD2 or 3 (lol! 3!).

Now if you are watching or watched the Blsck Ops 2 Gameplay yu should know that it is completely badass.
Nope. Didn't notice any "badass" anywhere. Just looked like every other CoD game. Brown environments filled with chest high walls that you view from 1 million set pieces.
I actually liked it, but I literally can't read that spelling or grammar without grinding my teeth to the point that sparks fly out of my mouth.

But anyway, the best...series? To be honest, black ops and modern warfare are the only "series" so far.

But anywho...I'm just going to go ahead and say Modern warfare 1. The story was solid, even unusually brave at parts, the gameplay excellent, and the multiplayer legendary.

Then activision just had to go and smell money, didn't they?

Modern Warfare 3, for the multiplayer. Couldn't give a damn how bad the single player is, multiplayer is all I care about.

Modern Warfare 3 would like to have a word with you. All the problems of MW2 and then some.
Heh, you are probably right, but I never played that one. I wasn't gonna make the same mistake twice :p.

I want to vote Modern Warfare, but that would include more than just COD4... MW2 and [presumably] MW3 were godawful...

Therefore I voted 2.

I forget, was Cod 2 the one that featured you playing as different allied soldiers during WWII, because that one was pretty cool. Watching Russian mass charges one minute and learning about the segregated American tank battalions was pretty cool. I have to mark that or Modern warfare 1 as my favorite ones in the series. Just because they either tried to tell a story (that wasn't completely retarded) or used actual people and events to the best of their ability.

You dodged a bullet there! (If you'll pardon the pun :p) It's the worst in the series in terms of multiplayer IMO

MW1 is by far the best game in the series. It has an awesome single player campaign, the last not to have a retarded, ADD catering, epilepsy inducing story/gameplay.

It actually had a comprehensible plot, the nuke scene was awesome and memorable, the pacing was good, the nice stealth mission added a good break from the frantic action without being out of place or flow-breaking, the graphics were very nice without being rig breakers (though that is mostly true for the other games as well)

The multiplayer was the best I've played in the series. Slightly imbalanced, but they all are, it managed to be more than a twitch-test.

Weapons actually took skill to master, each having specific recoil and fire patterns, different accuracy in burst fire or auto fire, etc - unlike the magical laser weapons of MW2-

Having played ONLY hardcore mode I quickly learned that battlefield awareness, paying attention to the noise your enemies make, clever use of grenades and out-manoeuvring your opponents ALWAYS beats fast reflexes and twitch gameplay.

Campers were my bread and butter since I knew how to flush them out, and having 2-3 people rage at me and calling me a hacker simply because I actually figured out what the big square box on the top of the screen does always made my day.

Without being a particularly good shot, or particularly fast and terrible with a sniper rifle, I considered it a bad day if I had less than a 5:1 KDR on any map.

I'd vote for Black Ops as the worst, not the best. The multiplayer was the biggest train wreck of awfulness that I have ever played online.

Modern Warfare is the best, even though MW3 sucked too. CoD4 alone makes the MW series easily the best.
My opinion exactly. CoD4 is definitely the best CoD, even though CoD 2 puts up a strong competition. MW2 and MW3 are gigantic piles of shit that I would rather throw in the trash than own. Hell, pretty much everything after WaW has been and almost certainly will be awful.

Oh and Black Ops 2? It even uses the same fucking FONT as Crysis 2......

Anyone saying that CoD:MW was the best game either 1: Didn't play the first two CoD's or 2: Doesn't know what the hell constitutes a good game.
Well I guess I don't know what a good game is, because I can surely state that CoD 4 is not only my favorite CoD game but also my favorite game. Ever.

You're going to have to try harder than that.

Well I guess you indeed don't know what a good game is then! Any game reviewer worth their salt, sees that almost all CoD games are mediocre at best. The only reason it's so immensely popular is because casuals keep buying it, thinking they bought some epic hardcore game. And no, don't come with some 'official' review site. As most official review sites are NOT worth their salt. And neither is metacritic or something similar, since those reviews come from ignorant users mostly.
