Before anyone jumps down my throat, I have two reasons to limit to the new series. First, if I go for the old series as well, there are way too many choices. Second, if I included the old series, Ace would win by a long shot.

And yes, this was inspired by the "best Doctor" poll. And I used the search bar, and nothing came up.

As for the actual topic, the best of the new companions, to me, is Amy Pond. She just has really great chemistry with the Doctor, and is able to hold her own. Rose Tyler had the same thing going, but she never really saved the day outside of a Deus Ex Machina. Amy Pond, on the other hand...

After those two, Martha Jones never really left an impact on me one way or the other, Mickey had all of his badassery after he left the TARDIS, Donna's personality grated on me too much, even after toning it down. And Adam...that kid was an idiot.

I still hated Adric the most, though.

You forgot Jack. He's technically[/I] a companion too.

Rose ftw. Piper & Tennant made one hell of an awesome doubleteam.

I dunno, I loved Martha, but maybe that's just 'cause she's fiiiiiiine.

Also, what about Wilf? :p

Haven't seen enough of the new series to judge how good Amy is (damned pretty though!), but I think character-wise I actually preferred Donna. Which is saying something, because I can't stand The Catherine Tate Show.

Donna Noble. She easily had the greatest character depth of the three main compainions, and she was clearly cast not to be a romantic interest for the doctor. She was the perfect foil for tennant, was brilliant, catty when she needed to be, and had the most tragic end to her companion career of the three.

She was a fabulous character, often more interesting than the doctor, and gave the 4th season a ton of life.

Second place goes to amy pond, because I really like her, and she's absurdly hot.

I gotta say, Amy's 'Mr. Grumpy Pants' had me laughing the other night, AND the police uniform didn' hu- wait, aren't there rules against commenting on looks and the sort?

Karen Gillan is fucking HOT. Of course she gets my vote...

Otherwise, I like 'em all.

Donna Noble- The best!

But I absolutely love all of the companions except for that clown Adam. He was a tool and a half.

Characterisation wise, Donna hands down.

The others sort of meld into obscurity for me and I'm yet to see enough of then new girl to judge.

Donna, she's by far the funniest and probably the best actress.
(why do people like Amelia pond? she's been in like 3 episodes and hasn't been far above average for any part of any of them.)
Because she's stupendously attractive and we're slaves to our base desires. That said, she "hasn't been far above average" because she's only 4 episodes in, the first was getting her legs, t and the second had the doctor considering sending her home for being a screwup. The character will develop, she just hasn't had time yet.

Rose is awful and should be forcefed her own mascara. Donna and Amy are my favourites. Definitely agree that Adric is the worst ever.

Don't you believe it. Romana, Peri and Leela pwn Ace.

Of the new ones, Amelia Pond. Donna was good, but there was that policewoman's outfit.

Rose/Martha/Mickey are the same whiney chav.

Personally, Donna Noble and Martha Jones were the only two companions that I've seen that I've actually had any respect for.

Rose Tyler just seemed... a bit off to me...

Easy, Donna because the lack of sexual tension really allowed the character to grow. Best overall story arc as well. Reminded me of the good old days of Leela.

Amy Pond is crotch-achingly attractive though.

Best one was Rose, although I did like the dialogue between the Doctor and Donna.

Should do this poll again at the end of the season, still too early to get a good fix on Amelia, though saving the star whale, good jump in the right direction

Damn it, I can't decide! Rose was the Bad Wolf, but the universe was changed because of how awesome Donna Noble is. Rose was left on a beach, Donna had to lose it all. Rose looked into the heart of the time vortex and caused the forming of the next Doctor, while Donna was a Doctor.

Actually, laid out like that, I'll say Donna, since I haven't seen the new series yet (damn finals, getting in the way).

I gotta give it to Amy Pond. I didn't expect to like the new series, but the interactions between Amy and the Doctor have definitely changed my mind.

Well, I really like all of them, but I'd have to go with Martha Jones, mostly because she was the easiest to identify with, partly because she was with the Doctor when I started watching, and partly because I still don't know how to pronounce her actress's name.
I'm mildly irritated about Rose's status as MacGuffin Girl, but not enough to really start anything over.
I loved Donna's character, but she was so out there it was herd to connect with her until the end, unfortunately.
As for Amy, well... she's only been in two episodes thus far (I live in America, so I have to wait) so I can't really pass judgement yet. I like her, though. She's got potential.

And Eleven is looking to be great.
