Voted for the boss in lieu of getting to vote for Viconia or Liara/T'ali

But i can see how it's a subject response. The boss is a patriot, a soldier, a realist and a great tactician. But this doesn't necessarily make her likeable. To some she might come of as cold, strict and cruel.
If you've played through all of MGS3 you should know that it is simply a facade. If you haven't, no I will not explain, one does not simply summarise a Kojima plot in one forum post.

Big fan of Tali. She's very well developed (disbarring the first game where she was just kind of there) as well as sympathetic, and she can be damned funny, too. Liara also gets an honorable mention for similar reasons, though I found her slightly less likable.

It was a tie between Alyx Vance and GLaDOS. I picked GLaDOS because... The Boss was a close third.

Kreia. Quite an interesting character. Doesn't give a damn about anyone but the main character, and keeps manipulating people into helping him/her rather than resorting to the traditional band-of-brothers-type motivation that most RPGs default to.

She's also rather far from being a sex symbol.
Not necessarily!

I think this is a good choice though.

I would say that Alyx Vance is probably the best one but she will get lots of votes anyway so I gave mine to Cortana because I really liked her in the first Halo game as well as the books although I suppose the books don't count...

Since nothing else comes to mind, and I'm replaying through the GTAs at the moment. Catalina.

Damn, that girl is hilarious.

Farah from Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.

True, she was a ***** to protect in fights, but her character was a great mix of vulnerability and determination. She wasn't a she-hulk, she wasn't a badass, she was just a regular woman.

Leliana - Dragon Age Origins.

I don't really have a reason why, she just came across as the most 'real' to me.

I love The Boss. She had a rather limited range of emotions, but that was simply due to the tone of MGS3. But she had amazing characterisation, as well as incredibly real-world relevant opinions and ideologies. And unlike so many female characters out there, instead of being the friend/lover/companion, she ended up being a rather decent motherly figure, who wanted to raise a child to be the best it can be, instead of pandering about with all the lovey bull (Yes, one needs love, but that's not going to make you learn the hard lessons). Or more like a rather brutal older (Much older) sister. Either way, I thought The Boss was possibly one of the best female characters I've ever seen in a game, second only to Ivy in Soul Calibur 4. Dat suit, guyz, dat suit.

Also, I never got why people liked Alyx. She always seemed bland to me.
Finally, someone else! Was she an incredibly simple character? No. But there is nothing amazing about Alyx. She just seems like a normal character who has some extra lines and has no romance bollocks getting in the way of the story (Unlike too many others).

Gotta go with The Boss as stated in the poll, she is pretty much the reason why MGS3 was a good game, if it stopped at Volgin/Shagohod and had The Boss plot removed the game would of been nowhere near as great.

Anyone but Alyx Vance. I'm tired of seeing a piece of dry toast get all the love.

Cortana and GlaDOS are not females, as such. AI constructs with a feminine UI.

That said, best female NPC goes to either Kreia or Miriam Godwinson. And I'm tending towards Sister Miriam as just thinking about that self righteous ***** makes my blood boil. She's the reason Planet always end in the cleansing fire of the Flame Deluge. Even the Gaians will nuke the bint.

My knee-jerk reaction is to explain the number of games and the width to which i enjoy them. But that seems liek a sucker game drawing into an (inevitable) discussion about who enjoys a subjective medium the most :)

Yes i've played all the games. Yes i know the back story, the lovechild, the hatred mixed with unbending loyalty and i'm privy to the hallowed grimness with which she sets out to accomplish above and beyond her call to her country.

Notice how i wrote, "To some" so as to imply that it did not necessarily imply me? The implications of the boss defection is one of the basic tenets of the whole franchise, liking Zelda/Cortana or one of the drake Chars is also a viable option. But in my opinion you have to have some appreciation for the entire lore of MG to appreciate the Boss fully, while liking Zelda came from me just shooting silver coloured pixels into a blue pig. IE, the games i've played doesn't really portray here as all that pro-active, but i know that she is in some of the others.

Hence i called a subject matter. Sorry if i seem like kind of a DB here, but i'm a fan of Kojima.

Of those listed, I'd say Alyx. But of those not listed, I'm inclined to say Celes Chere - if Viconia DeVir counts as an NPC, so does Celes. Close competition being Viconia, Rose Cassidy, and Edwina.

I vote zelda because she is one of the first game characters that came to being.
Because she ws developed so many years ago, it is difficult to expect her to be as complex, well developed and coherent as many of the others.

Zelda was developed? More you know.

Anyway the choice was between Glados and Alyx. As charming as the Glados, a stable mind is always a big plus.So Alyx

Morrigan from Dragon Age: Origins

She was one of the only party members in any game that felt like she wasnt there only for your convenience. She Actually had her own goals and motivations that the player was unaware of.

Shouldn't GlaDOS not be on this list? It's a supercomputer with a female voice, not exactly a woman by any standard definition.

Top 7 off the top of my head in no particular order? (Because seven! That's why.)

Eleanor Lamb - Bioshock 2
Everything Bioware - Seriously I'd have to write like 9 entries for DA and ME. (Pick your favorite if you can't accept this cheating.)
Farah - Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
Navi - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Xion - Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days
Tohsaka Rin - Fate/Stay Night
Tezuka Rin - Katawa Shoujo
(I wonder if I can get away with those last two...)

All of them are strong in different ways, they all had significance, they are all unique.
It mattered to me what happened, I genuinely cared for these characters.
Sometimes I protected them, other times they protected me, in at least 3 of the above they may have threatened my life.
Sometimes it was predetermined narrative, other times their opinion of me or well being was directly influenced by my choices.
Occasionally things didn't go as well as hoped.
Those seven+ are top of the list for characters (male or female) I'd want by my side in a game.
