But anyway: what fighting game do you guys think is the best this generation? I'm thinking that--when I'm done with SCIV--I'll pick up another fighter for the PS3 to play online, so kudos as well to whoever can offer suggestions about what type of game a casual fan of fighters might enjoy.
I don't know about the best, but as somebody who's pretty casual and also loves some Soul Calibur, and seeing as how you're looking for a game with good online code I'd recommend DOA 4 if you have a 360 lying around. You can buy it pretty cheaply these days.

Since you asked about the PS3 though I'll only say that if you're going to pick up Blazblue get Continuum Shift. It's got a few more characters, most of the people playing BB have moved onto it and it's currently supported with patches, the latest 843 kb update came just a little while ago. I don't know what it changed but I'm sure it enraged somebody. And their net code of course is pretty good. You have a lot of really good games up there so I couldn't really pick between them.

Personally I wouldn't bother with MK vs DC or Street Fighter IV. SSFIV is too defensive and slow and matches involve a lot of projectile spamming and MK vs DC doesn't seem to have a good reputation. Even people I know who played a lot of it and loved it would call it a trashy game.

BlazBlue for me, but MvC3 is so much fun, although horribly unbalanced (stop using DANTE) and fairly lackluster in terms of content. BlazBlue is how every fighting game should be. Vibrant, colourful, full of interesting characters you WANT to play as, and it even has an intricate, multilayered story, at least for a fighting game anyway. I played 40 hours of that game and I never ventured online once, but with online capabilities I imagine it becomes the perfect fighter. It has a balanced roster, great replay value, beautiful visuals. As for Brawl and Street Fighter, Brawl is just Melee but worse, and Street Fighter IV is not fun at all; it's more like being abused during hard physical labour. It's so hardcore and rigorously focused on perfection that it's somewhat pathetic. Super Street Fighter IV looks somewhat better though.

Also, BlazBlue gets extra points for having the greatest fighting game tutorial ever, Teach Me Miss Litchi!

Super Street Fighter IV. Its just so damn good. BlazBlue is pretty awesome as well.
Came here to say this. Enjoyed the other games on the list, but these two are the best pure fighters on there.

Blazblue! Where no character is the same or just some color swap.

Though I have yet to get a CS I only have CT.

I want the new one so bad...

Marvel 3 and SSF4 are the deepest games by far, but they also have ridiculously huge learning curves. You pretty much have to spend hours in training before daring to go online, lest you be pounded into a fine red mist.

Tekken 5 isn't on the list.
because Tekken 4 was better. on topic my vote is for Soul Calibur IV only cause im better at it than everything else on the list (i actually like MvC3 better but the controls dont make as much sense to me as Soul Caliburs)

Me vs my Ex. She would pick a fight. I would respond, then she would basically plug her ears and bury her head in the sand as I try to justify my position. Then she would pop her head back out and return fire by bringing up something astronomically insignificant and completely unrelated to the topic at hand. It would leave me stunned, and then she would pull out her finisher by sweetly asking for me to do something for her. Seriously, the battle never ended and it left me worn out, defenseless and I still havent figured out how to beat it.

......Oh sorry. Although the only one I have for this gen is Street fighter IV, I would prolly say Tekken or Soul calibur. Pick one, as far as I am concerned there about the best overall from a technical standpoint.

true my MvC3 record is 0-15 oddly enough i can beat it on hard with no problem (until i get to Galactus anyway) and none of my friends (with better online records mind you) can beat me at it =(

No... Just no, Tekken 4 was the most broken, and worst one ever made. Very few characters were competitive, and the only ones that were, would win with just wall spam.

I would rather play Tekken 1.
