Completely split betwen Unreal Tournament 2004 (for the multiplayer side of things) and Far Cry 2 (on the SP side).

Wasted a lot of my younger life on UT just playing against bots mostly. Bombing Run + Inhuman + Alcohol + No Time Limit would see me through the night.

Far Cry 2 is the game I've put most time into on SP, having played it through fully twice and almost fully through another time. I love almost everything it does and lament constantly on Ubisofts stupidity on not making it easy to mod.

Bioshock, absolutely. Though in terms of what I would consider a comparatively unadorned, vanilla FPS, I'd also say Rainbow 6: Vegas 2 is still pretty damn entertaining.

Half-Life 2, since I don't count Deus Ex as an FPS.

Crysis would get a vote near the top as well - heavily underrated for the most part.

The term "Best Ever" is used too often and will lose its credibility due to it being a subjective topic. There isn't an absolute best. You should use a phrase such as "In your opinion" or "Your Favorite" due to the individuality of the subject and opinion.
Or he could just assume that we're all inteligent enough to work that out for ourselves, and that of course this isn't an objective topic.

Which we are, and which he did.
I agree with Crysis. Amazing game.

The only possible answer is Quake 3

Quake III Arena. (Yay! I see I'm not alone. I thought nobody remembers this game anymore.)
Yeee, high five brothers!

I'm also going with Quake 3/Live for the best FPS in my opinion. Call of Duty 4 comes in a close second though.

Halo and Call of Duty. Halo 2 and CoD 2 specifically.

Hmm, well yup. Having had considerable time to ponder your querey, my answer has not changed.

BF 2142 and BF2 were amazing. CoD4 is damn good. I like that people actually mentioned Stalker. As someone else said Quake 3 is epic. I don't know if I can point to one exactly and say it's the "BEST."

I loved The Chronichles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. It blends action FPS and stealth in such a unique way. It's sequel is somewhat bland.

System Shock 2 (1998, I think...).
Look past the flaws (As many as there were), and you have a Ground-Breaking Monster of a game that will laugh at you and Stick Glass up your gums if you even messed one little thing up, and WE like it like that!

And I can remember me pissing (With Exitement.. Of-Course...) myself because I had got the game on Chrismas 10 years ago.

If I could choose a Second and Third, 2nd Would be Morrowind: Back when the series wasn't stagnating so hard you could actually play it without barfing. And Amnesia: While the gameplay and Characters were nothing new, I loved it for it's Immersion and Timeless Plot. While the plot wasn't that good either, I like it because of how it un-ravveled. Instead of being told (i,e Monolouge, Text, or GooblyGook) you actually had to do terrifieing things JUST TO REALISE WHY YOU'RE DOING TERRIFIEFING THINGS.

Are we talking about single-player experiences, or games that include multiplayer, or just total packages in general?

Best story-based FPS: Bioshock, with Half Life 2 close behind.
Single-player + Multiplayer: Modern Warfare, with Timesplitters: FP close behind.

Greatest FPS total package (story, multiplayer, extra modes (training, trials, etc.) etc.:

Timesplitters: Future Perfect, which is also the best multiplayer shooter imo.
HELL YEAH! Awesome game! Why no PC version? Very shameful.
hopefully they'll announce Timesplitters 4 at this year's E3 and hopefully they'll release it on the PC :)
