Its not here to create arguements, more to provoke ideas on what people really think.
Metroid is a good series, thanks for the input
Provoke typically implies a negative response, as in the kind that would spur an argument. Never mind that the most people here don't like *which is your favorite" "what do you think is best" "what is the best" type of threads. At all. They're really frowned upon. Especially when there is ten dozen of the mother's that could easily be found with the search button, and the poster neglects to use the proper grammar.

no Metroid Prime on the list? it's legendary
I never considered the Metroid series as FPS.

1. The first four were side scrollers.
2. Way too many puzzles
1. the original ones weren't part of the Prime series, but OK
2. thats what made Prime great, for me anyway

Ok lets just wrap up this thread.

1)Unreal Tounements have such a lame story and focused too much on multiplayer that i didnt really deem them as good as the like of the COD's and Half Lifes which have great story and mulitiplayer (if counting TF2 and half life teamdeathmatch on pc for half life)

2)Quake is great and yes i agree i should of put that on the poll

3)Timesplitters is also a classic and if the space permitted it would have been on their, in my opinion its flame tag/infection is probably the funnest game mode to play with friends.

4)All soldier of fortunes are inferior in nearly everyway to any of the series on the poll.

5)Yes Duke Nukem isnt really a series but its up their because it is a classic, and has very similar gameplay as Doom which has a formula for fun :)

6)Never played No One Lives Foever so i cant really comment on that.

7)Gears isnt an FPS.

8) Although not a series as such, GoldenEye on the N64 is the benchmark of quality and in many peoples opinions is the best FPS of all time.

and finally to sum up, as different people prefer gameplay and mutiplayer over story or graphics over cool new modes or features, it is really hard to suggest one that ticks all the boxes. Im not a Valve fan boy, but The Orange Box has all the FPS action ud ever want, with the compelling story of Half Life, crazy fun multiplayer of TF2 and although not technically a shooter as such, Portal for its mind blowing puzzles.
Nuff said.

Several people have said gears of war isn't an FPS, so sorry and can people stop quoting that comment I made? Thanks
Like I said, I think Halo is one of the best, but I'm also looking to get Call of Duty 4 so maybe that will knock Halo off the top spot (at least, in my eyes...)

Any others i havent thought of please suggest
From hours played I going to go with TimeSplitters.

The series offers various gametypes.
The single player is extended due to the challenges.
The multiplayer is extended due to the mapmaker.

If the servers were still up I probably be playing this online.

If the staff cuts at FreeRadical haven't squashed the development(and there's no Haze holdover) I will be most up for TimeSplitters 4.

EDIT: Can you imagine they trophies/achievements this would have!

EDIT: If I could still handle the Goldeneye graphics, it'd be up there.

(Perfect Dark?)

Either Half-Life or No One Lives Forever. I love those two franchises.
NOLF was such a great series. I played the first one but not the second. Was it better than the first?

You're damn right it's legendary, but unfortunately the prime series was FPA (first person adventure) so it doesn't count.

I think you should put an other option, because I almost couldn't vote on account of there being no Timesplitters in that list, but I will go for Duke Nukem.
No One Lives Forever: A Spy in H.A.R.M.S Way is pretty darn good too, I actually enjoyed it as a shooter a bit more than the original. That said, the first game was a better overall product with a funnier script and tighter action sequences. Check it out.

I chose Half-Life after much consideration; I almost picked Battlefield, because that's where I've had the most fun (BF42, BF:VN, and BF2) out of all the lot but when I think of FPSes I think first and foremost of single-player experiences.
COD, especially COD1, comes the closest to second place.
