I'll bite. 4th generation...but not for the consoles.

Amiga. The first computer games with sampled music & sound fx. The innovation of dedicated hardware. Original games. Dune2, lemmings, cannon fodder. This is the point were gaming became good.

I preferred the sixth, which I believe is the PS2, XBOX, GameCube, and Dreamcast. If that istn't the 2nd generation, then I voted for the wrong category.

I'll go with "I don't care".

I could form some sort of intelligent argument weighing the pros and cons of each generation and forming an insightful conclusion in which I elucidate in brief on seeing gaming and it's lifespan bereft of labels such as generations but, in summary; "I don't care".

According to Wikipedia:

* First generation (1972-1977)
* Second generation (1976-1984)
* Third generation (1983-1992)
* Fourth generation (1987-1996)
* Fifth generation (1993-2002)
* Sixth generation (1998-2006)
* Seventh generation (2005-)

So then I vote for fourth generation. SNES & Mega Drive, those were the days!!

Gotta stick with the fifth generation.

Silent Hill
Metal Gear Solid
Zelda Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask
Half-Life

and many many more I'm just missing out right now (I'm tired, but these are the ones that had the biggest impact on me).

But my point is that the games had to be original since they just conquered the third dimension. This generation seems to be infested with sequels, but no reason to cry, people! There's still some original stuff like Assassin's Creed or Bioshock (yeah, slap system shock 2 in my face, I'm talking about overall experience).

I'ma say it's a tie between fourth and fifth. SNES, Genesis, PS1, and a lot of good computer games. Third and sixth generations are pretty awesome, too. First and second.. that's a bit before my time, and I get the feeling ya kinda had to be there. Come on, seventh generation, step up your game!

Definitely the fourth generation, as it contained the SNES.
Gaming was far less mainstream and I was far less anal about the quality of the games I played (see: everything was good).

And Link to the Past.
