I'm going to go with GTA SanAn, mainly because I loved spawning the Vortex at the top of a tall building and driving off, landing in the street without so much as a scratch.

Advanced physics engines are stupid.

Vice City had the best music, introduced the buying businesses mechanic, had the coolest setting, the best voice acting (maybe GTA4 beat it there), introduced helicopters and planes you can fly, had tonnes of new weapons.

It was just such a big leap forward.

Tommy Vercetti wins!

It's a tie with GTA 3 and Vice City. Because 3 was the first 3 dimension instalment. And Vice City is one of my personal favourite games ever.
Did you really just revive a 2 year old thread?
Oh, I really just did. What's the point of keeping them if you're not going to post in them? :p

Setting/atmosphere: Vice City
Engine: GTAIV

I would love to see GTAV return to the 80s with the new engine... not necessarily in Vice though (we're overdue for a new GTA:London or a GTA:Tokyo).

San Andreas hands down. Yes it got frustrating at times (all Rockstar games do) but the enjoyment outweighed the epic failure rage-quits. It was genuinely fun to mess around in and the story at least made enough sense for me to care about. Unlike GTA 4, where I couldn't give a flying shit if the city got nuked and all the main characters died a slow, painful death from radiation poisining.

Vice City is my favourite. City big but not confusing, missions original for the series introduced here and repeated ad nauseam in sequels, deeply interesting characters, vibrant colors, physics not irritatingly realistic, and so on.

I actually hated GTA4. Thought it to be one of the worst games I've had for my 360.

The colors sucked.
The vast majority of missions were car chases.
I didn't enjoy the imposition of tactical gunfights.
The over-realistic physics pissed me off.
Lack of variety in weapons sucked.
The characters were uninteresting, as was the plot.
The "choice" system changed next to nothing.
I missed being chased by the army.
City layout confusing and overly large and unmemorable.

Lastly (that I remember - it's been a long time since I traded it in), the cheating system pissed me off. Many of you won't consider that a complaint, but when I consider a game both bad and boring, if cheats are available I'll likely use them just to blitz through the game and get it over with. Having to fuck around with the phone while driving was a fiddly ***** and often resulted in failing a boring mission again.

I actually like that idea of a cheat system. It makes cheating a bit harder and not as easy as pressing R2 R2 L1 R2 left down right up left down right up.
On another note IV and the expansions are by far my favorite next up would be vice city, 3, and lastly SA. My only gripe with San Andreas is the gloat of dumb shit to do. You gotta eat but worry about being fat and this crap and that crap. You wanna work out? Sure but only a little of the day which makes no sense. I have TS3 for all that crap man

For best soundtrack and most likable main character? Vice City

For most freedom and the largest sense of "bigness", San Andreas

For the greatest wanton carnage and "realism", not to mention best vehicle design, and quite a bit of fun? GTA4

I compare them to the time they came out:

Vice City, Friggin Vice City. it had everything.

Sa was better, but VC was a perfect-ish game.

That said I loved every single one so far.

I loved ALL of the GTA games (and I've played every single one, one of the first games I ever played was GTA 1 and then GTA London), and in the end GTA: SA wins it for me, closely followed by GTA 2. I simply don't like the dark and damp Liberty City... Also SA had so much space to enfold, space I was disapointed to see removed in 4.

Vice City was awesome too, I really love the bright and "happy" feel this city gives you, it's like some kind of evil joke that presents the city as something its not, like the beautiful skyline of Miami, which hides the gangland beond =3.

And I enjoyed CJ, Ryder, Big Smoke and Sweet. They are the kind of over-the-top gangster I want to see in these games, mainly because they are fun to play with (don't read into that). Niko is so dark and emotional that the game becomes some sort of mopey gangster movie, and the fun couldn't be supplied by Jacob, Brucie and Playboy X alone...

LOVES YOU JACOB!

Well, I'm a huge fan of the GTA series (from 3 onwards, mind you), and picking my favourite is tough. Strangely, I often think of 3 as being the best in the series, but that might be nostalgia kicking in - it was simply an amazing gaming experience; freedom like that simply didn't exist prior to 3, and I often found that the many glitches found throughout the game (such as the "hidden city" behind Shoreside Vale) gave the game a lot of exploration potential. And once you mastered flying the dodo, well.... that was a whole different story.

Still, I voted San Andreas - I personally enjoyed the story, and the numerous narratives which spun off from CJ's main "quest"; my personal favourite would have to be Toreno's side missions, and the entire "government conspiracy" idea that went along with those. Plus, James Woods voiced Toreno - that is freaking cool. However, the story in IV was fantastic as well, but SA still wins out for retaining that easy-going, almost cartoonish approach to the life of crime which your character embraces. Yes, you're murdering people, but it all feels so charmingly light-hearted. Vice City was excellent at that as well, and I really loved how colourful everything was in VC.

So yeah, there's something to love about all the GTAs. They're all fantastic games which I can go back to at literally anytime and have a lot of fun.

4 improved general gameplay and mission flow.

FLYING SCHOOL SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED! I was stuck on that shit for hours. Never got stuck in GTA 4.

4 for missions.

SA for dicking around.

If you had of asked me last month I would have said GTA SA, but I but the DLC for GTA IV and it makes the game so much better, especially the TBoGT, it adds more fun to the game and makes GTA IV what I wanted it to be in the first place.

Should add the renditions done on the portable systems. They were pretty good.

GTA IV Ballad of Gay Tony.

Though shorter than IV itself BoGT had a lot more colour and life to it than IV managed. It keeps the advanced graphics, handling and features of IV with most of the crappier bits removed (Niko my Cousin! Wanna go look at Big American Titi *BANG*.)
